Loose crank pulley imitating bad main/rod bearings?

Can a loose crankkshaft pulley imitate bad main or rod bearings? My 8n has been making a hollow tap tap tap noise on starting which then quiets though seems to be getting worse. I have been assuming was bad bearings, but I disconnected the fan belt and found the noise went away - almost completely. Poking around I notice that the crank pulley is loose, with maybe 1/6" back and forth, and a degree or two of rotation. Could that be the trouble?

Interestingly enough, for a tractor that would foul amost immediately if it didn't catch right away. thatI thought was due for a new top end several years ago, itcompression is now up to 135 psi wet/140 dry and burns negligable oil. Oil pressure goes up to 20 almost immediately upon catching, then continues up to 40, settling down to 35 or so at fast idle once it warms up.

Oh, any tricks on tightening the crank pulley? mine doesn't have the ratchet and is just a bolt though with a slot in the bolt head to engage a drag link-type big screwdriver blade, but it doesn';t seem to want to turn either way either.

Yes.

The noise will be most noticeable upon engine shut down.

A loose crankshaft pulley will wear the crankshaft keyway eventually requiring replacement of the crankshaft or expensive repair.

I find that I can tighten the nut sufficiently on the pulley with a hammer and chisel or punch. It is easiest with the ratchet nut. Keep the spark plugs in to give back pressure. I have done this on several rebuilds and have never had a problem with the nut coming loose.

I don't know if that is "the" problem but it is definitly a problem and one that needs to be fixed before it damages the nose of the crankshaft. An impact wrench is the best tool for R&R of pulley retaining bolts.....

If the noise went away by removing the fan belt. Are you sure the problem is not the water pump? They can make a lot of noise.

The crank shaft pulley does need to be fixed.
