2n spark question

been having to pull start my 2n, turns over ok but won't fire up, just replaced points, condensers, rotor, rotor cap, plugs and plug wires, made sure carb was getting fuel(opened up and dropped bolt on bottom of carb) fuel flowed well, was ready to bush hog however won't start, checked for spark and have spark but sure seems like a weak spark, what would you all suggest to do next, i will clean gound from battery make sure battery is fully charged, what else should i work on?

thanks dave

" , checked for spark and have spark but sure seems like a weak spark, "

It's either weak or it isn't; will it jump 1/4" in open air? Hook up your spark checker*, turn the key on & crank the engine. If the spark jumps the 1/4” gap, you probably don’t have a spark problem. If it won’t jump the ¼” gap, you have a spark problem.

" i will clean gound from battery"

Yes! But clean both posts. In addition to charging the battery (see tip # 60), chances are you might need new cables as well (tip # 41). And, don't forget to clean all the grounds, to include the mating area between the starter & the block as well as the ground at the battery box.

Post back w/ results or more questions.

*If you don’t own a spark checker w/ an adjustable gap, buy one. In the meantime, an old spark plug w/ the gap opened to at least ¼” will work. Ground it to a rust & paint free spot on the engine turn the key on & look for a spark.

don't believe the spark will jump 1/4 inch, maybe 1/8" tops, will clean all grounds, anything else i should check? really appreciate the help, this is really my dad's 2n tractor which he inherited from his dad, very sentimental piece of equipment for our family. what is the mating area you are talking about?
thanks again

Loosen the starter bolts. Do not remove them. Slide the starter out far enough from the block to get some sandpaper in there. Do the best you can.
