Left brake slipping.

1948 8N, Front Mount. Was working with my tractor a couple of days ago and noticed that the Left Hand brake was not braking. No rubbing sound, just will
not turn/stop the tractor. The Right Hand side is fine. I have normal pedal travel. I assume that I need new shoes on the L.H. side. I assume that it
is the shoes and not a matter of, out of adjustment. Is that correct, or could it be something else inside the brake drum that has failed? Any cautions or
thoughts?

any signs of lube leaking at that hub / brake?

If no, have you adjusted the brake? it has a 'star' wheel adjsuter just like old style drum brakes.

No evidence of leaking.
Addendum: I have read on other 8N sites that there is almost no way of wearing out the brake linings...therefore, I will look into adjusting the brake..if I can only find my brake adjusting tool.

Brake adjusting tools?

Oh you mean a jack and flat blade screwdriver :)

Jack up that wheel, spin star then spin wheel, when wheel drags, back off till no drag.

And then when you find the adjustment wheel will not turn you get to take it all apart. :D

Least I waste time, does anyone who has adjusted the brakes recently remember if the star is turned clock-wise or counter clock-wise?

FO -4 says counterclockwise.

My late 47 8N left side brake has the star wheel toward the bottom of the brake. If I pull the free end of the brake spoon toward the front of the tractor, it brings the shoes closer to the drum (less free travel).

"Addendum: I have read on other 8N sites that there is almost no way of wearing out the brake linings..."

Based upon my experience, I would disagree. Once my brake drum was removed, I found shoes with no lining and a drum that was worn beyond repair. Metal on metal had done it's damage! Machine shop said drum was far beyond tolerance in diameter even before they started to turn it. So, new drum and new shoes; stops great now.
