Proper idler puller for my 12v?

I searched and saw Soundguy had a set-up with a good idler pulley and there was a discussion about it, but the thread referenced has disapeared into the aether.

My fan belt is putting a real nice shine to my distributor and I'd like to stop that before it "polishes" right through to the interior. No amount of adjustment to the angle of the alternator is doing the job well enough.

Lots of Ns are running a 12V alternator
without the need for an idler pully.
I would take a look at your mounting
bracket, adjusting bracket and fan belt
length to see where I could adjust or
modify them so that no idler is required.

Whut U-Dawg said... I have never had the need for a idler on a 9/2N I guess its because I use a store brought mounting brackets...

Your alt is sitting to high are to close to the engine... The store brought bracket is adjustable... Another problem is the axle may be hitting the alt and knocking it up the fix is to weld stops on the center axle support...

Using the set-up from our hosts and have tried numerous configurations but none hold the alt in proper position. Had the hood off recently and went through a goodly bit of trouble to try and get it angled correct, no dice obviously.

What they said
is your belt too short? causing you to mount the alternator
too high and tight?
with all conversions, belt alignment and unrestricted belt tracking come first, you make all the other stuff align with that.
I've long since sent all my front mounts down the road,
but if I remember right....
you'll know you have the alt mounted right when your first thought is....
'Well, that looks pretty silly sticking all the way out there' :D

Hanging out where it's supposed to didn't work for me as I use it in the woods and the front axle's articulation would allow the whole shebang to get knocked loose-throw the belt. Putting it tight and high caused the belt's deflection to polish the dizzy. I made an idler that spins on the lower bracket mount bolt.

I'll try and post some pics tomorrow.

Ok, I forgot to take pics this weekend so I ran out tonight with a flaslight and sho these. Basically I used a long 3/8" bolt through the lower alt mount bracket and turned a chunk of aluminum down with a wide tapered groove for the 4L belt. Pressed some bearings in and used clamping collars to get the spacing right. If anyone has questions abouth the pics or needs more clarification, email's open or post.
