Ford PTO Usage Question

I have a 1943 Ford 2N. My question is on this Ford, while running the PTO with a 5' rotary mower, how fast do I run the throttle? All the way open, or is there a rated speed for 540 PTO? Thanks - Bob

as you know, engine speed is tied to pto speed ( and ground speed ) via a fixed ratio ( ground speed has gearing .. etc. )

thus there IS a certain engine speed that makes 540 pto speed.. however with no tach.. most of us just run 2/3 to 3/4 throttle and go with it.

look at the cut. if you are laying it over.. it's too slow or the blade is not dressed properly. ( don't have to be sharp like a razor... 1/32 flat is ok, but not dull like a pencil either. )

I mowed some monster 7' weeds with my 8n a few years ago and had the hand throttle yanked all the way and chugged thru them in 1st gear. ;)

Thanks for the replies. I was running it about 3/4 throttle in 1st gear, but got to wondering how close that was. Thanks again for the fast replies. Bob

I checked mine with a hand held GPS a few years ago. Found the speed in 2nd gear that equaled 540 PTO speed. Was about 3/4s open.

For those that may read this thread in the future - the advice is for a tractor either having no auxiliary transmission, or one with the auxiliary transmission sending power 'straight thru', or said another way, not in Hi-Range or Low-Range.
