Neighbor just bought an 8N!

I hear this noise coming up the lane, I come out of the garage, and there is my neighbor with his great grand daughter sharing the front of the seat, he had just bought this, and had it delivered or hauled it himself. I went over to take a look, supposed to be a late 40's model, I forgot to look where the distributor was, or where the tractor number is on the casting, did look at the flat spot, paint may have covered it up. I believe he said its a 4 speed. I took 2 photos, but I'd ask him before I'd post them. it looks complete, mostly correct, possibly original paint or it was kept up and painted a long time ago, which is of no consequence anyway. might need a little work, not sure about everything on it, except the motor, seems she's burning oil. It runs good, no noise, not sure about oil pressure, no rod knocks or anything.

I'm not all that familiar with this engine. My neighbor is a long time mechanic, owned a small engine, power equipment shop, is a restoration buff and all that goes with this kind of hobby. He's got a very nice spacious shop and place down the lane from me, and I've seen some really nice things come out of that shop since I was a kid. He's very capable, this should not be much of a challenge, but its not his first ford tractor either, he had an 801 series if I recall.

I'm wondering what the engine may need, complete overhaul, rings cylinder hone, valve job or what, I'm sure he will check compression. No doubt he can take it right down to the bare block, but wonder what you guys do with tractors that may keep the bugs away? LOL! Any thoughts? I figured I'd ask, being curious.

Seemed like it loaded up at an idle, then smoked more than when it was just running and driving. Hard to figure if its got stuck rings or its just blow by from worn rings. Do these have valve seals?

He figures he may take it apart at some point before next spring, the grandaughter seems to like this sort of thing, it would be really cool if he kept it and it ended up hers one day, but he usually sells most things at some point, moves onto something else to work on. It was really cool to see another ford tractor on this hill, that makes 3 here now LOL !

Be awesome if he took a few rounds in one of my food plots with the single bottom plow, I'll bet he'd enjoy doing that.
 
You say load up which to me says it is running to rich which would be black smoke. Now if a gry smoke yep oil and yes could be stuck rings but with out history of it hard to say. If white smoke coolant due to a head gasket or some such
 
Blue, seemed worse or noticeable after it idled a few minutes when we were talking, he could not see it behind him when he took off.

Remember how all the older cars, if you idled for too long, when you put the pedal to the metal after, it would clean out whatever was loaded up, or when something was not worked all that hard, maybe not wet stacking, but still needed to be run hard for awhile for similar reasons.

6.9 V-8 IH/Navistar diesel would load up if idled too long, then you'd take off and there would be a cloud of blue smoke, fuel, oil or what have you, run it like its meant to be and it would clear right out. I remember this in every IH S1600 I drove at the lumber yard, not so good to let them idle for long.
 
That IH sounds like a number of Detriots I ran years ago. Was told to slam my thumb in the door because I would then be mad and would run them hard and that was the way they always ran best. Foot on the floor and pushed them harder then you could any thing else and they ran fine
