Cracked rear housing

A guy wanting to look at an 8n I have for sale sent me this pic. He was blading a driveway and heard a pop sound and the tractor would not move . What could cause that to happen ? I feel sorry for the guy , he seems to feel like his tractor is part of his family .

That looks to be a ring and pinion gear type of problem where the ring gear some how rode up on the pinion and pushed the rear end apart

"What could cause that to happen ? "
Well....using the 'top-link' in that position, and,..betting that he was bladeing in reverse, with the blade turned around backassward...He hit something under the soil with the lft. side of the blade.
Top link in the wrong hole....does tend to put a LOT of strain on the rear casting.!!!!
I'm seeing a 'bent-to H...' stabilizer, on the lft. side rear!!!!!

Seen a lot of pix, with those very same stress cracks, or holes where they were not supposed to be!!!

I would think He's going to need more then just the rear center housing on that one. I have parts and housing if needed in NJ. Always best to stay local if you can. Shipping on these heavy parts can kill a deal.

Guy did nothing wrong. Its not the first 1 of those I've seen. wifes Uncle who ran a tractor salvage lot got them in. He pulled the motor, transmission, rear tires and scrapped the back end.

Dad had the same thing happen in the late 70's to our 63 4000 after he had the local dealer replace the ring and pinion and they set the axle bearings way too tight and it ended up pushing itself apart. Never had them do much on our tractors again after that plus they wouldn't stand behind their shoddy work. I have no idea why they went out of business not too many years later! ;>) My 2 cents worth Greg NE

bummer
unless I was bored, I wouldn't even bother looking inside it. junk is junk.
just sigh and start unbolting stuff to split it and swap in a different rear half. pretty easy, and they are to be found most anywhere.
look local of course cuz of the weight and spread the word to try to find just a regular guy parting out a bad engine/trans tractor.
Most tractor yards will have one, but it might be more $ there.
I almost could help you. Just tore down one for a local...9N though.

Most likely what happened is that the rivets attaching the ring gear to the differential gear housing sheared off. One of the rivets probably got somewhere it should be so that when the ring gear kept turning, it caught the rivet and wedged against the housing. Something had to give, and it was the housing. Would also explain why it won't move now, as the ring gear spins freely of the gear housing.

A new used housing and new expensive bolts to replace the rivets will probably fix the tractor.

Ya the crack seems to be starting low and going up not start high and go down which would be a center link hook up problem
