I recently purchased a 1948 8N Side distributer with the lever on the side for the Sherman. The lever doesn't look like the one in an on going topic. It is flat lever to start and turns to a round one when it bends back like a chicken wing. The problem is that there are only two positions. Back with the flat part 30 degrees from horizontal is a position with drive engaged. Pushing forward it stops with the flat part horizontal. This is neutral. It is a solid stop. I tried the innie and outie steps in archives and no change. Previous owner 20+ years was no help. He never found the need. My question would be what would be the first thing to try.

Sounds like you have a over/under.To find the third
position, Put the lever in neutral and see if the lever
will slide out to the left.

I agree it sounds like a combo. It can be a little tough to find
the true neutral spot and pull it out. There's not much slack.

No way it is a 1948 the side mount distributor did not come out til April or May of 1950.
As for the Sherman shift it could plan and simple be stuck due to not being used or the Sherman could have big problems in it so it does not shift as it should

As old said it could be stuck from non use OR it could be a creeper trans (highly unlikely) in which case the
lever will not pull out on the neutral detent.

agree
while very unlikely, it being a creeper is possible.
With a creepers straight cut gears, a tired one could be very difficult to change ranges.
at this lever 'stop' rock the tractor, mess with the clutch, turn the motor, turn a tire, while doing the shifter push/jiggle.
Hey, ya never know

Thanks for the information. I hate to do unnecessary disassembly. I just needed to get much more aggressive. It did pop out for more positions. I will see what they are when I get it running again. It is the same shifter and so far the same shift pattern shown in the John's site for a combination Sherman. Also a re-study of the serial number indicates that it is a 1950. Thanks for the catch.

Got the 1950 8N back together and tried the different gearing.
With the lever in there were only two positions, back and neutral. Nothing forward.
When I pull the lever out there is the neutral and when pulled back there is a slower ground speed but no gear forward. Driving and trying to find a forward position hasn't helped. So what I have is two (back ) positions. As the tractor loosens up after years of inaction I will keep trying for the forward positions. What I have now is a great improvement. Thanks again for the advise.
