I recently purchased a 1948 8N Side distributer with the lever on the side for the Sherman. The lever doesn't look like the one in an on going topic. It is flat lever to start and turns to a round one when it bends back like a chicken wing. The problem is that there are only two positions. Back with the flat part 30 degrees from horizontal is a position with drive engaged. Pushing forward it stops with the flat part horizontal. This is neutral. It is a solid stop. I tried the innie and outie steps in archives and no change. Previous owner 20+ years was no help. He never found the need. My question would be what would be the first thing to try.
