8N governor up and down

Cranked up one of my 8Ns today. With the throttle about half way, the engine would increase and decrease and oscillate like that. At a slower throttle, it just quit. I think it is the carburetor, which I rebuilt a few weeks ago. She was running fine until now. I think the float may be sticking and unsticking or something to that affect.

So, I thought I would fish for some opinions on this. Maybe someone has experienced this?

Racing engine is often due to worn bearings in the race inside the governor. They get flat spots on them and stick. Pretty easy fix.

Thanks, Matt!
I"ll look it up in the service manual. Not sure what I am getting in to, but if you say it"s an easy fix, then it is worth taking a look!

Check out Stiener Tractor Parts' You Tube Video on repairing the 8N governor. You can search you tube or check the Stiener site. A young lady performs the repair. After watching her i took my gov. apart and put it back together without a problem.

Dissassemble the governor and look for worn(flat) spots on the 4 balls and and grooves in the plates. There should be no sloppy fits which can create lost motion. If things are badly worn, sometimes it is less expensive the get all new innards for the unit as well as spring.

Hmmm... come to think of it, I had a difficult time getting the governor to stop leaking even though it appeared to seal. Small drops were coming out. Could the outer casing be warped? Any thoughts?

Thanks for all the comments. I"ll get the parts. But if anyone think the cover could be warped, I just as well get a new one.

Leaking is not the problem But yes, folks overtighten the gov bolts and warp the gov housing..Sometimes can lay them on totally flat surface on sheet of sandpaper and level them back up--apply thin coat of RTV Ultra grey and snug em up--do not overtighten.....Important-short bolt on top when re-installing it..
