Why do they Pop out of Gear when Engine Braking?

Search the archives and came up with zippy. I have an NAA with this condition only in 1st gear. What is the typical fix for something like this? Thanks Rick

It is caused by excessive wear of the shifting collar engaging teeth and transmission thrust washers allowing less than full engagement of the teeth.

The only positive repair is a probably cost prohibitive overhaul of the transmission.

I had a D14 Allis Chambers that would jump out of third gear going down hill.

Moved to the flat land of west KY and it was not much of a problem. However, I did have the brakes in top condition.

Would not want kids driving that tractor and you must insure the brakes are in top working condition,

It will take off down the hill and there is nothing you can do if the brakes are bad.

A friend of mine was seriously injured when his WD45 with FEL jumped out of gear going down hill and with the FEL load, the rear tires would not stop it even though the brakes were good. The tractor slid downhill into a revine and over turned.
