ford 8n throttle problem

Went back to mowing today and my throttle kept kicking back to idle if there was any load on the mower. I normally run it in 1st gear with throttle about 75%. If i get to a particularly thick patch I will reduce my swath in half or maybe kick the throttle up a bit to keep the mower at a constant rpm. Any ideas why my throttle kept springing back to idle?

Maybe you are missing the governor compensating spring?

If you're lucky, it's the governor compensating spring.

But you probably have a flat ball in the throttle rod & grooves in the throttle plate.

Listen to dell's advice. I just went through that myself. Sounds like you just have worn parts like the quadrant plate and the ball under the hand control.

I just replaced my quadrant plate and since the hand throttle was so cheap, I just bought a new one instead of trying to just replace the ball. Replacing these parts is not much of a job but you need to remove your whole air cleaner assembly to make things easier to access.

Here's a pic of my old worn throttle plate and my new one and a picture of how the ball was worn.

You may need to use a hand impact screw driver to break loose the three screws on the throttle plate.

Dell this may be the problem. I have the attachment point at the throttle linkage near the vertical spring but the one bolted to the case is missing.

Any idea where to find this compensating spring tab that bolts onto the casing? I can't seem to locate a part identifier for it in my 8n manual.

The number on the spring is 8N 9855 and the number on the spring anchor is 8N 9827. They are available at some of the parts sources. If you have problems locating them I have a spare anchor I can send you.
