1953 Jubilee leaking grease on outside rear wheel

My Jubilee has just started leaking a loose grease on the outside of the rear wheel. It seems to be coming out from the inner most washer and wheel. This side has been worked on before i bought it. The center depression in the axle was welded up, so using a puller-if required - is going to be a bear. It sounds like a seal, but then again looking at the weld on the axle I'm not sure. Any thoughts, on why one would weld the depression? Is it the seal, or will re torquing the nut help stop the leak. How bad is it if I run it until winter and then tear it down. Not much happening in Wyoming in the winter, except trying to stay warm.

I will note that the previous owner used a John Deere dealer to work on the tractor. Had the brakes replaced and Diff fluid leaked out on the brakes - nice!

Thanks

Gunner

I'd say that hub is probably worn out and has taken
the seal with it. I'm not sure why they would weld up
the hole, but with any luck the axle splines are fine.
I don't know how much you run it but if it's not for
heavy tillage or 10 hours a day I say it could wait. If
the hub is on there good and it takes a hub puller
that weld won't matter. If it protrudes just grind it flat.

If you have to buy a puller get ready. That's a $200
tool you won't use again. Not sure where you are
but I gave one you could use.

I've worked on the engine and transmission, first time on the rear end. Some questions: Is it possible to jack the wheel off the ground and put a pry bar under it looking for slop? Just how hard is it to replace the hub, any tips on how to make it easier or quicker would be appreciated?

I live in Cody, WY pop 9800. I also have a 8" puller, is that okay or do i need a bigger one? Thanks for the offer. But if i have to buy it, where, nd do you have a part #?

thanks

"Is it possible to jack the wheel off the ground and put a pry bar under it looking for slop?"

Yessir, it is. Even just rocking it by pushing laterally on the top
is sometimes enough.
If the hub is badly worn, they'll come off easily.
They really shouldn't though.
Check out John Smith's tutorial [b:a201141452]here.[/b:a201141452]
He shows an 8N, but the Jubilee is basically the same in this respect.

Okay, it is loose that is for sure (hub that is). Do you know if a 8" puller is large enough? I like to have everything in front of me before I start, it keeps trips to minimum.
Thanks for John Smith's site, I like the part of driving in figure 8's-that really makes sense, and simple.

Thanks. Do you know what size the axle nut is?
ut is 2in needs to be tightened to 450FP after working the tractor check nuts and retighten.

Thanks. I have order the parts. Be about 4-5 days before they get here. Question. The axle nut is loose now. What if i tighten it to take the slop out until the parts get here?

Okay. Then I do figure 8's like John Smith. Anyway it is worth it just to get her so I don't feel the wheel is going to fall off. I really need it now and if that gets me the 4-5 days it's worth it.

I'll let you know how it works. But as aside, how does the hub come loose? Not tightening it up to 450 ftlbs? It is not a real active part, no up and down or side to side. If it is up against steel you would think it would just stay there, if torqued properly. Sort of like an engine head. Just a thought.

Here's something interesting. After cleaning the grease off, I noticed that there are two washers under the axle nut. The other side has one per design. It looks like the hub was worn before and the fix was to add an washer, or it is not a std axle and is 1/8" longer - not probable, or somewhere inside there are missing parts, kinda doubtful but one never knows.

Ever see two washers under the axle nut before?

Look at the picture in John Smiths article. If the axle splines are sticking thru the hub like that one, then no matter how many washers you put on there, you are simply tightening up the washers/nut against the larger part of the axle & doing nothing to tighten hub to axle. I have seen a larger inside hole washer used on inside to go over the axle splines & regular on outside, in that situation, such as to allow tightening against the hub, but that won't get you far, as soon the hub assy will be rubbing against the brake parts.

Thanks you've been a great help. I'm sure i will find the enlarged washer when she comes apart. Have an auger on it now, and need to punch 5 more holes then I'll set it aside until the parts come in.

if I have any problems I'll be sure to post them pronto.
Thanks again.

I took it apart and am ready to reassemble. One thing I noticed is missing, there are no shims between the axle housing and the brake backing plate. Is this possible? If not where can I get a shim pack?

I read how to check the clearances and will check that out, but I'm fairly sure I'll need some shims. Any help will be appreciated.

robably can not get those metal shims anymore....most simply stack up multiple gaskets as needed. Be sure to pay attention to John Smith's sealant procedure at hub & behind it at axle & rubber or cork ring, as that is probably where you leak was coming from, based on your description.

Got it.
Thanks. Read the procedure. I'll get back to it in a week or so. Final irrigation going on, as far as water goes out here, use it or loose it. Wouldn't want my pastures to look like Washington's. We been there 8 years ago, not pretty..

I got it together, it looks pretty good. I was looking for the torque specs on the studs that are attached to the anchor plate. I think I remember something like 20-25 ft/lbs, but I can't find it now. Reason for asking is that one of the studs was welding to the plate, and another one had the top snapped off, I welded that one on. Any idea where I can the torque specs? Thanks.
