Camshaft question for the Gurus

Camshaft replacement question…

At what point do you guys replace your camshaft? Not trying to be cheap during the Jubilee engine rebuild, but starting to bleed a little bit and would rather put the $164 into something else . The distributor drive gear shows wear, how much is too much?

I figure the shaft is 60 years old, It will probably outlive me. At what point would you guys put in a new camshaft on a rebuild? I've done a lot of reading on this site and seems like most folks don't replace cams.

I should add the lobes show little wear and spec out fine.

Thanks for any input.

Would you buy a remanufactured engine that reused the old camshaft? I wouldn't and as a general rule I renew the camshaft on all engine rebuilds.

If there is no damage to the gears and the lobes and bearing surfaces check out to spec., what do you gain by replacing it? The one you buy may not be as good as the one you are taking out. That seems to me as being the same as machining the crankshaft, even though it checks out on spec.
