OT bearing question

I am repairing my riding mower that won't move unless pushed and that is tiring. I finally found a missing thrust bearing at the base of the variable speed pulley. I looked on the parts sheet it looked like a washer to me. Went online to get the part which is called a thrust bearing and when it arrived it looks like a 1 5/8 washer to me. Question is, when is a washer a thrust bearing? I checked several places and they all look like washers to me.

Can I run a tiller with my'52 8N?Only want to till garden 2x/yr;getting too old for walk behind.

A lot of thrust washers have dents or
divits on the face of them to hold oil.
And I suppose many of them are spec ed to
a certain width for that particular
application.
Have you tried a hardware store - in those
rows of boxes with misc hardware in them?
They do carry several sizes of common
bushings and the like.
You might get lucky and find something
that works.

In general a thrust bearing is a component that supports a rotating axial load as opposed to a radial load. In terms of construction thrust bearings can be roller assemblies, ball bearing assemblies, or simple flat washers. Their function in life is to act as wear surfaces between the structural components subject to the axial load.

Thanks for the reply UD. I already have the part and it looks flat like a washer.
TOH- A little over my head, but I do see what you are getting at. Thank you. The "bearing has a washer above and below it. They are quite thin and the parts diag. only gives ID and OD size. Would it hurt, do you suppose, to replace them also, with a little thicker new ones? I have a million or so washers etc. and this isnt exactly a porsche engine I am working on
Thanks

The 3 piece assembly sounds like a needle roller or ball bearing design. They consist of two hardened "flat washers" that act as races with a roller assembly sandwiched in the middle. They are basically generic assemblies and for a low-tech application one of these should work fine. They would also be a nice upgrade to a plain thrust washer application as long as the thrust load isn't too great.

Even when just looking for something to read, I look on this forum and learn something new. Thanks for all the info you folks are willing to share. :D :D :D

So you ordered the piece in the middle of the sandwich and it looks like a washer? Is it bronze? If so using new washers above and below from your collection should be fine. If the middle of the sandwich has needles or balls like in the link from TOH you will want hardened washers above and below.

works the other way too.
Governor thrust bearing in little Farmalls is the washers/bearing in the middle thing........usually junk with the balls missing...
While waiting for the new one I ordered, I replaced it with washers only, the same overall thickness, with grease glopped on em.
Worked fine
