Ford Jubilee

Here is fine by me, not that I have any say in it!
The regular "Ford" forum would work too.
Many of the guys answer faster on the N forum.
The NAA is the last of the N's after all. ;)

I just purchased my first tractor which is a 1954 ford jubilee found it out by serial number. It's good running old tractor plan to do some routine maintenance on it any
advice in this area would be appreciated.

Thankyou;
Travis

There's the old adage, if it ain't broke, don't fix it! :)
Seriously though, Bruce and souNdguy's 75 tips will go a
long way, most apply to an NAA model also. Link - 75 tips

I use the same plugs, wires, oil, etc on my 8N and both
Jubilees. What oil to use depends on climate. If you give
us a general location that would help with suggestions.

Your NAA would have live hydraulics and those are different from
the rest of the N series. If those ever become an issue it would
be a good idea to know if you have a vane pump or piston pump.
The vane pump would have a square body; the piston pump round.
They are primed differently and priming can become an issue
just by changing the fluid.

For electrical measurements, you'll want an analog meter.
Digital meters are too sensitive for the "noise" created by the
older electrical system.

Best advice I ever got concerning these old tractors though is
not to buy cheap ignition parts. Buy good quality points from
Standard Ignition (BlueStreak) which can be purchased at
many good car parts stores (part #FD-8081X) or buy the
Echlin premium line from NAPA. (part #CS753)
The cheap stuff from TSC or similar will leave you stranded.

I am located in central Arkansas East of Hot
Springs. The tractor has the piston type round in
shape not the vain. NAPA caries good parts how
about online distributors such as Yestetdays Tractor
and such. Analog meter did not realize that but
makes sense how do y'all feel about solid state
ignition convention kits? Mainly I my plan to change
oil and coolant for starts the temp gauge does not
work, clean the oil bath air filter just the simple
things.

Thankyou;
Travis

I really just plan to change the oil and flush replace
the coolant for starts. Central Arkansas is where I
live hope that helps East of Hot Springs. Napa has
good parts how about online such as Yesterday's
Tractor are the paints any good from Tractor
Supply? I also need to get a temp gage who carries
a good one? The analog meter makes sense thank
you for your help.

Thankyou;
Travis

plain green coolant.

the oil change is a good idea.

if you have the spin on filter it is a fl1a motorcraft or anything that crosses.. if it is the cartridge, it is a napa 1004 or anything that crosses.

i like 15w40 s/c rated oil in just about everything I use now.

ignition parts:

All 4 cyl models can use AL-437 or champion H12 spark plugs instead of OEM Champion H10 or AL 216 plugs.

Should a thermostat be used I would use one but what do you think pro/cons realize this. Lot of good information received from Soundguy. The tractor has a spin on oil
filtet conversion. The coolant I plan on using just green 50/50 mix antifreeze with distilled water Prestone is the best but most expensive what are your feels on the lesser brands?

Thankyou;
Travis

when it comes to the green coolant.. get whatever.. it will all be the same.

ford made it with a thermostat.. if it didn't need one, it would not have had one.

use one.

it goes under the water outlet / top hose connection.

Home Machinist,

Technically, your tractor is an NAA but not a Jubilee if it is a '54 even though the '54 NAA is identical to the Jube.
Jubilee is specific to Ford's 50th anniversary in 1953.

Does the front emblem say Golden Jubilee Model, or is there a ring of stars where those words would be?

Cheers,
T

I'm north of you here at the Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri. I get most of my tractor parts from my local O'Reilly's but in my town we have them or auto zone and auto zone you might as well go to China for parts since 99% will not be right

My Ford tractor is a 1954 went by the serial number
my hood badge would have stars no words if it had
one mine is missing. Will have to locate one
eventually.

Thankyou ;
Travis

Sounds like SG covered most of it.
The bulk paint from TSC, Majic brand, have gotten better
since they first released them. I've painted several tractors
with them. Just waiting to see how well they hold up now.
Their rattle cans match fairly well, but I've had them take
two days to dry when the paint was thin enough to see through!
I won't use it now unless they change that too.

Temp gauge on an NAA can be a crap shoot.
Since they are a once piece unit it needs to fit both the dash
and tighten/seal into the block correctly. I've had a few that
won't fit on one end or the other. For that reason I usually try
to buy them locally where it is easier to take them back.

I don't normally suggest buying parts at TSC, especially not
electrical parts, but if yours carries the gauge made by Tisco
it is probably the same gauge many online re-sellers carry
and TSC might be more likely to take it back.

Watch what you buy carefully though. One of my local TSC
stores puts the returns back on the shelf to be resold if they
don't "look" bad to the manager.

No, the first photo I posted for you is my own jubilee's badge (1953 only) that I repainted. The last link I posted with the ring of stars is the [b:7c1d049847]only correct badge[/b:7c1d049847] for the 1954 NAA.

Tall T:

Those photos of the hood emblems looks like the
other I've seen they all had just the stars. I have yet
seen one with the emblem with 1903-1953 in
person on a tractor. Was it you that told me that you
can get repoduction of these hood emblems? Let
me ask you this T are 1953 model year Ford Jubilee
tractor pretty rare?

Thankyou;

Of the 128,965 NAA's Ford made there was a total of 77,474 1953 "Golden Jubilees" and 51, 491 of the 1954 non-Jubilee model. So I guess the 1954 non-Jubilee is the rarer one ;-)

Replicas of the 1953 Jubilee and 1954 non-Jubilee medallions are both readily available.

"I have yet seen one with the emblem with 1903-1953"

Well, it's not "in person", but here's one of mine. :)

Royse:

That's one good looking tractor that you have. Did
you do the resteration, if so how long did you work
on it to get it to such great shape.

Thank you! Yes, all done at home.
That one took Joan and I about 3 months of nights and weekends.

Before and after pictures here on YesterdaysTractors.
It belonged to a friend but caught fire and burned in the woods.
I bought it after it burned.

Royse:

Royse where did you buy your paint that you
painted your jubilee with? Also what is the black
looking button under the insterment cluster right
above the stering wheel?

Thankyou;
Travis

The red is Majic brand Ford Red from TSC, the Ford Medium
gray is Tisco brand (VanSickle) that I bought here on YT.

The black button I think you're looking at is a light.
The gauges were not back-lit so Ford put a little light in that
can with a slit in the front to shine out on the gauges.
Here's one on YT.

I don't know for sure what caused the fire.
I think it was electrical.

Royse:

It could be a bulb at first I thought it was the starter
button but it couldn't be for safty reasons. Where
did Ford put the head light switch originally? How
well did the red paint from TSC work heard pros
and cons I've used it a little seemed ok. The tisco
brand haven't had the pleasure yet they only sell it
by the quart, gallon or case of the spray paint .

Thankyou;
Travis

I've had good results with it. I use their reducer and hardener.
It's a mess without the hardener. It takes forever to dry, fades
quite quickly and doesn't shine as nice.
But that's most tractor paints, not just that one.

That was my first time using the Tisco paint also.
It didn't shine as well as I was expecting, but that may be in
part to it being my first time applying that brand.
I would like to think not, I've been painting for over 30 years,
but I won't blame the paint until I try it again.
If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, its a duck! :)

A case of spray cans wouldn't be enough and two cases
from different batches [i:2f5840c221]may[/i:2f5840c221] vary in color.
I used almost a gallon painting that Jubilee.
Obviously I painted multiple coats as is recommended.

Something came to mind how does Ford engine red
compare to Ford tractor red in the colors of red.
Maybe be like Chevrolet red but to me more
orange. Probably colors vary too by manufacture.
