Tractor wouldn't start

Guys after months of trying and attempting every suggestion you had I finally got my 8n started. I wish I could tell you exactly what I did, but to tell the truth I just don't know. New carb,new distrib, new coil, new plugs {twice} New cond.{twice} cleaned all fuel screens and gas tank new ignition switch,I finally ran some sand paper over the new points and checked my timing by removing the valve cover plate watching the intake valve. Put it back together and it cranked right up. I don't know if they are all this way, but my timing has to be almost perfect or it will not run. Thanks for all of your help John in Ga.

iming not a critical item on most low compression engines....within 10 to 20 degrees, usually crank up.
 
did you have spark before you sanded the points? some points come with a glaze coating on them that is brittle, but almost like glass.. has to be removed with a knife blade or ignition hone, then have the points cleaned or burnished.

sanding likely limited your points life as it removes the thin hard exterior metal, and leaves micro fragments of grit media that causes arcing and pitting, making you have to sand them more and more.

maybee pull some brown coarse paper thru them to clean them and go.
 
Well you know I would have thought so too, but appears so in this case. 2 or 3 degrees off in either direction and it won't hit a lick. get it right on and it runs like a clock. Its running now better than it ever has, It ought to with all the new parts. Thanks everybody for all your help and suggestions.
