Nice surprise tearing down a 9N

Tore down a barn find 9N to nuts and bolts for a guy I know,
and got a nice surprise.

It was hot out so I didn't fight to start it (it runs), just dragged it in and got to work..
Replacement engine, had a Sherman combo lever (I thought)
After the split.....hmmm, never saw a gold-colored Sherman before.........
yep, a Creeper.
I checked, 9-1 on the shaft turns when engaged.
Nice shape.....turns very quietly, clean oil, no water in the trans.
Lucky dog....I should charge him more for the job.....
no questions, just thought I'd share with y'all.

ps.....I'm not a fan of 6v, front mount, 9N's....he drove it off the trailer, but the engine was making a lot of noise (turned out to be just a trashed governor...sigh)....but I should have looked it over closer.....and bought the whole tractor......live and learn...

Well he certainly shouldn't have any trouble paying you for your labor.
Maybe you could work out a trade? :)

The top cover on the unit appears to be for a two shifter, a combo. I believe the creeper had a different top cover.
Did you open it up and see straight gears?

Kirk,
ya, I was curious about that too.
Shifter does not pull out, throw between ranges seems short too.
seems shorter than my combo.
I did mark the input/output with a grease pencil, and counted the turns....9 to 1.
Like I said, it's not mine, I can't open it up without the owners permission.(He wants wrench marks only on fasteners to remove a part, then he sells them 'as pulled')
I'll ask him though.....doubtful.
I saw the pic on the Smith website, so I'll know what to look for if I can open it.
Hope John Smith sees this thread to give more info.

more info, Kirk,
couldn't resist carefully popping the shift rod spring threaded plugs.
hmmm interesting....spring and detent ball present on rod closest to the shifter.
other side..no spring..no ball...looks like no rod either...
just the threaded cap up top, and it must be an expansion plug in the rod hole....with factory finish and the Sherman emblem in the center of it.

(quoted from post at 07:52:16 07/30/15) Nice score - for him.
I've never seen an under drive Sherman in
person.
Lots of ODs and combos and a few
reversers.
But never a UD.

Hey UD,
ya, that's what fooled me. I think the step-down has the same shifter and rod setup as the step-up.
So, when I saw the combo lever, I just ignored it...combo right?
Owner wanted it (main reason for complete tear-down)
But when I got in there....what [i:1fdaa5434b]is[/i:1fdaa5434b] this? LOL

The top cover 10A766 is a combo top cover. I was under the assumption that they had a different top cover for the
creeper. I've only seen one and it was in a tractor so I can say for sure. I don't know if John is on the site all the
time but would be interested in what he has to say. Maybe send him an email Via his site.
If it was a combo somehow made into a creeper in would be interesting to know what the inside looks like.
If your guy is taking in out for sale than surely he will want to one it up cause if he sells it as a combo and it's a
creeper the buyer might not be happy Plus if it is a creeper it's worth $300/$400/$500 more.
