Thinking I made need to rebuild motor

My 8n has smoked since and got it and I was told that was flooding, but today when taking the bush hog off, I noticed that one of the safety chains
was black from where the exhaust hits it. When I cleaned it off the substance was oily, which makes me think that the smoking has been burnt oil all
the time. I hope that I am wrong and that is why I am posting, in the hopes that someone will tell me that the black oily stuff on the chain is from
burning too much gas. Also has anyone ever used a stop smoking product, like STP, with any success?

black sooty smoke on the chain is running rich.. too much main circuit.

black sooty wet buildup in the chain is still rich.. but probably some water in the exhaust blowing out!

if your cyls were pumping oil it would be burnt and come out as blue smoke... black smoke is rich fuel...

look at your plugs.

tan = good

sooty black = rich

oily black = pumping oil

As sound say. Does it use oil?? As in you have to add oil say after running it a few hours?? Did it maybe sit a long time at one time before you got it?? If it did you may want to give it an ATF treatment to free up sticking rings etc.

The P/O said the tractor had been sitting about two years, as for running it I would say that the longest period of time I have ran it would be thirty to forty-five minutes at a time before something needs to be worked on. I did put a bottle of M/O in it when I changed to oil after I replaced the head gasket and it may need a little more time. I will pull the plugs to see what they look like and post what I find.

If it sat 2 years with out running good chance it has sticking rings on the pistons and a good ATF treatment can free them up. MMO in the oil will do little or nothing to help with sticking rings

I pulled the number 3 plug and found that it is sooty black, so the carb is still burning rich, I have already put a rebuild kit in it, so I probably did not adjust something right, so I plan to go back into to try and find out what I missed. I am also going to check the compression but I really feel like the carb is the problem. Thanks for all of the tips.

If it starts easy, and has power and plugs aren't oily, I would not comp check at this point. I mean.. You CAN.. But I wont have anything to do with running rich. That's carb or vac leak issues...

When was the last time you serviced the air cleaner?? It could be full of water/dirt which can make one run rich. Also can to take the main jet needles the one that points down at an angle and screw it all the way in and it still run?? If you can then yep you messed something in the carb

Carb gaskets, throttle packing / shaft seal, carb to manifold gasket, manifold gasket, manifold crack
