Not charging

I took it off, and had it rebuilt. That was a few months ago. It was charging until recently.
You might try and repolarize it, but if it was working that should not be the problem.

If all the wiring is intact, most likely the voltage regulator is probably bad. there are good trouble guidelines in the FO-4 service manual that all owners should have.

rodeo man.........first some ground rules........the 8N came from the factory 6-volt positive (+) ground. Many shadetree mechanic wanna bees install their replacement battery negative (-) ground just like their 12-volt BelchFire-V8.....mox-nix.....yer genny can be positive (+) or negative (-) ground. It just depends upon how you install yer 6-volt battery and how you POLARIZE yer genny. Look fer yer square can voltage regulator. It is under yer oil pressure gauge. It should have 4-wires attached to it. A ground wire under the sheetmetal attach screw. Then you squarecan voltage regulator should have 3-wires inna row. FLD (field) from the side of yer genny barrel. Don't muck with it. Then you should have a HEAVY wire from the side of yer genny attached to the squarecan VR terminal called ARM (armature) Then you should have a HEAVY wire on the 3rd terminal of yer squarecan VR called BAT (3-guesses what BAT means and 1st 2-guesses don't count) NOW with the engine OFF, arc-spark the side-by-side ARM & BAT terminals together. Me? I use a broad blade stubby screwdriver. You kenn use bailin' warr iff'n you want. Once you've POLARIZED yer VR & genny, you should be good to go. Many genny rebuilders de-magetnize the poles as matter of course 'cuz they have NO KNOWLEDGE of polarity of vehicle its going into. So you MUST re-polarize yer new rebuilt genny. You kenn re-polarize as meny times as it takes to feel warm and charged. .......HTH, electrical Dell

I really appreciate that response, but that's all over my mechanical ability. I know it was charging not long ago, because I would see the gauge jump a little after starting. Then it would ease down. Can it lose its polorazation? I've atleast heard of a voltage regulator. If they aren't expensive, I'd make a stab at changing it.

Before you start throwing pars ate it, you need to do a bit of troubleshooting. If you have a voltmeter you could check battery voltage with the tractor not running and then with it running. Is the battery going dead? Like I said before the FO-4 has a good section.

I hate to hijack a thread, but I'm in almost the same spot.

Generator passes the motoring test.

Let's say I polarized it properly. (I did try, but I'll do it again next time I'm at the cabin, making sure to do it right.) And it's still not charging. (As in no current going to battery, and voltage being no higher than the voltage when the engine and everything else is turned off.)

I presume the next place to look is the V/R. What needs to be checked/adjusted? Or is a replacement necessary?

Sounds like a replacement voltage regulator is in order, if it has one. some older models used a cutout relay and charging rate rate was adjusted by a switch on the generator.
