Key switch won't cut tractor off

I finally got around to working on my 8n (which I have nicknamed the beast). I changed out the wiring coming from the alternator to the solenoid and resistor and totally disconnected the wiring for the lights for now. When I started it, it started however I had not tightened the fuel line at the sediment bowl and it started pouring. When I switched the key off it kept running, and I had to choke it out to shut it off, I looked around to make sure that I had not left any wires off and didn't see any. For safety I checked to see if it would start with the key in the off position and it doesn't, so it has to have the key switched on to start but won't shut if off when moved to the off position. Could one leg of the switch go out or am I missing something?

Bet you have an alternator on it and you have the #1 excite wire from the alternator going to the ignition switch in some way so the alternator is back feeding the ignition system when you turn it off. You need a diode or resister or light bulb in line or yep you will have that problem

newbie8owner........old is correct, yer alternator needs the idiot lite so you kenn turn yer 12-volt alternator OFF with key switch.........electrical Dell

There are two wires running from the switch one goes to the wire that connects to the push button and solenoid and the other goes to the buss
connector (for lack of better terms) that all of the other wires run to. I am sure it is a simple solution just trying to get some help before I start
rerunning wires.

I'm sure after reading this that you have it wired 100% totally wrong.

thumb button has 1 wire that goes to solenoid small third terminal.. period.

solenoid has 1 big wire to the battery and a buss bar to the starter. there is also a smaller, but still big wire that runs to one side of the ammeter, other side of the amp meter runs to the bat connection on the alternator.

key switch should have one wire to coil primary * , and the other to the same side of ammeter as the alternator.

if your alt is 3 wire, #2 loops to charge connector stud. #1 goes thru a diode or lamp or resistor and can then connect to the wire from the key switch to the coil * .
