What type of lube should I use, if any?

I purchased an older wet grinder on eBay to sharpen old, hand-forged axe heads. I took off the gear cover to grease them and noticed the wheel shaft does not have a grease fitting, hole for oil, or any evidence that it was previously greased. I don't see any bearings on the shaft either. It's hard for me to believe that it runs dry despite that fact that it turns pretty slow, about 115 RPM. I tried removing the shaft but after removing all gears, snap rings, and the allen set screw in the first picture, decided I didn't want to drive out the shaft and risk marking it up.

I'm hoping some of you experienced mechanics can help me determine how/if I need to lubricate the bearing surface of the shaft in the housing, and if so, with what?
