How long for 3pt lift to start lifting?

When I move the lever to lift the 3pt hitch, there is a longish period - 5 to 8 seconds - before it actually starts lifting. This may not seem like
much, but it is when one is barreling towards a stump and the mower won't lift, and is quite a long time compared to other hydraulic
gadgets I have, which respond almost instantly. I've always assumed it was just the nature of the beast, but just got wondering whether
maybe something was amiss. I haven't played enough with other 8ns to know what is normal.

s with most situations/questions, .....it depends. If you have been running with hydraulics holding up the hog, then I expect rather instant response, however, if you have been running with chains holding the hog up & touch control all the way to lower, then I expect some delay as ram cylinder re-fills up to current position, where it then will start to lift.

I have 2 8n's and a 2n and they all go up with very little delay if any. One of the 8n's leaks down in about 15 minutes with a 7' blade on but the other 2 will stay up for several hours.

kyle.........virtually instantaneous, take yer 6-in round dipstick plate off (it won't leak) and with engine runnin' look fer squirts. Kenn either be leakin' hydraulic cylinder (needs new rings) ...or... blown paper seat cover gasket. While Ford spec'd 5-gals of 90wt hydro-tranny fluid, 4-1/2 gals is plenty. Too much oil will splash out yer axle trumpets and greese yer brakes. Will also splash out yer tranny front seal and greese yer clutch. Not good, eh? .........HTH, oily Dell

Equally important, I hope that you have installed an overriding clutch between the tractor PTO shaft and the PTO shaft on the bush hog.

When was the hydraulic lift oil changed? If it's been years, or you do not know.

As others say, check for leaks first, but if no leaks, you might consider draining the old oil and replacing with new oil.

Check with others for the proper oil for your tractor.

That is the way these old tractors were designed, to clean the hydraulic sump, you drain the old oil out.
