Brother is going to build a trap--any suggestions, dimensions etc--I know nothing about hof traps-his main concern seems to be what kind od door, size, shape, trigger mechanism and such--any thoughts, experiences appreciated..Thanks

I built a hog trap pen out of welded wire 'hog' panels.. not the flimsy cattle panels.

i used a drop down door hung from the top that swings down. you also need to make a safety bar or latch so that when the door swings down, something moves to prevent the door from being lifted or swung back up. can be as simple as a rod that goes thru both sides of the trap that is held up when the door is up, but when the door swings down, it lets the bar drop to the next run in the cattle panel that you have taken a section out of and bent the tabs angled down so the rod drops tot he 2nd cavity, but cant be forced back up as the cut angled pieces above it stop it. like a crab trap kinda.

i set my traps out for a few days with bait, but make them so that they won't trigger. after i see that hogs have taken the bate a time or two, then i arm it.

a step plate that , via linkage, tugs on a pin once the hog walks to the back of the trap is an easy way for a trip mechanism.. pin pulls back as hog weights and lowers the step panel, when pin retracts, door comes down

i think your talking about wild hogs , when you bag a few , whats next does anyone eat them . ive heard their bad and ive heard the best bacon ever tasted or let the coyotes eat em up . i have a 223 sighted in for 300 yds if i can help ya

incedentally.. once full, we used my old ford 850 with 1 arm loader to actually move the trap and hog. ( loaded it up on the trailer and drove home like that... got a few funny looks! )

wild hog are just fine.

Trapping them lets you fatten them up and clean them out a bit.

depending on size, once trapped, some guys worm them, then keep them in a feeder pen till right size, finishing off with corn.

Or you can forgo trapping and just shoot them.

It's fairly fun and easy as hunting goes. don't have to be as quiet or still as bird hunting.. especially turkey.... nor even deer.

Hogs tend to be noisy.

Last time we went, we got to the area early and scouted some sandy spots torn up and tree rub areas and water holes, and we put out some whole corn. then climbed around/in trees and waited.. could hear grunting already by first light.

i posted a pic of a hog i got a couple messages down.
