OT- 35 chevy sedan engine

So the carquest I regularly buy parts from knows I'm into cars in general, and old tractors 6 volt.

They referred a guy to me with a 35 chevy. He's looking for someone to "get it started for him". It is still 6 volts.

it turns over but doesn't start. He has new but not installed:
points, coil, plugs, and maybe even a rebuilt carb. He said the battery is fully charged

what I think I know is- should be the 194 OHV chevy.

obvious things that pop out at me, take a known good battery, a load tester to test his battery. verify fuel and verify spark.

any other things I should think of taking?

A timing light. Goes w/o saying but I'll say it anyway, a basic set of tools (not metric :)). Maybe some ether.

The ignition points are going to be the critical thing.

Take a can of starting fluid (either). Get spark, Spray fluid into the intake of the carburetor. It should start.

Check engine oil first.

I may be wrong, but didn't a 35 have a 207 ci engine?
Have you had the valve cover off and tapped the valves lightly to see that are all free?

I haven't even laid eyes on the engine yet. talked to the guy yesterday and might head out Friday afternoon to look at it.

The little I know about the guy, apparently he is into old cars, and has some issues with old age and a leg injury that now prevent him from working on them.

being that from what I know, he drove it into the garage last year, I'm going to assume its something simple like fuel or spark, and nothing major.

Leave the starting fluid at home. All it does is put them to sleep, makes them harder to turn over & you don't need that on 6 volts. They are supposed to start on gasoline. Pull the plugs & put some oil in to help compression.

Joe,

Does it have the start button on the floor?

I've had 5 or 6 '47-'53 Chev trucks with floor buttons and always left them 6 volt, but in my '53 engine (235) in my '51 Chev van, I have a 12 volt sitting in the passenger side foot well and only the starter is connected to it.

I wanted an easy startup one time after a long sit and my last old 6 volt was on its last legs. :)

My start lever is made from an Austin gas pedal. I reach down from the seat to start it. when I had this engine in a flat deck, the start button naturally wound up by the gas pedal.

Problem found.

The coil wire had rubbed thru and was grounding out.

Only problem is car has the coil wire inside a metal wire loom coming straight off the key.

It appears there is no way to detach the metal loom from the back of the key.

Anyone have any experience with what I'm talking about or know where I might source a new key with the wiring attached?

This is an all original 35 so want to keep it that way

Does anyone know a good website for info on these old Chevys?
I have it running but it has a faint miss. Points look old. Owner wants a full tune up and original style plug wires.

Any ideas where I can order parts from?
