6 volt positive ground

in the process of changing the wire harness on my 1950 8n ford I noticed the battery may have been hooked up wrong. I have used it for
the past 2 months and did not have a problem. What happens if the battery is hooked up wrong. Will it hurt the battery or any of the
charging system?. I switched the cables around so it now has a positive ground and negative is one the starter. I hooked up my six volt
charger to the battery and so far after an hour it does not look like its taking a charge. I would like to keep it to a 6 volt system
rather then a 12 volt. Reason I changed the wiring harness was that previous owner sprayed the engine and everything on the engine.
Hopefully everything is hooked up correctly. Any suggestion as what to look for if it the battery was hooked up wrong.

Make sure you flash the generator. With tractor shut off momentarily touch a wire to the "BAT" terminal on the voltage regulator to the "GEN" terminal. When the engine is running, you shud see the ammeter needle move to the right showing charge.

Tom.......look at yer square can voltage regulator. It should have 4-wires attached terminals. The 2-terminals that we want to "flash" are side-by-side ARM and BATT. The other is the FLD and you IGNORE field and ground. When you "flash" yer squarecan voltage regulator, its just a MOMENTARY touching of the side-by-side ARM-n-BATT terminals, engine OFF. I use a broad blade stubby screwdriver. You can use bailin' warr iff'n you want. 6-volt gennys can be positive (+) or negative (-) ground. It is determined by how you hook-up the 6-volt battery. Would it surprize you to learn that each battery post will usually have (+) or (-) molded into the plastic rubber case. Wanna guess what that means? While there are some obscure advantages to positive (+) ground (it has to do with spark plugs) today's spark plugs are so much better than 1939's. Recommend AutoLite 437's gapped 0.025". They seem to foul less with today's NO-LEAD gasoline.........HTH, Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister

may be a regional term??

I have seen 'flash' used down here where I live too. 'flashing the field' etc.

Must be cheap regulator as there are no marking that I could find. The following will be from the direction while looking towards the rear of the tractor.
First wire I'm sure is ground as its attached to a mounting screw wire is black
2nd wire is yellow. it goes to bottom post on resistor bar. also attached to this post on resistor is yellow wire from starter.
3rd wire is red. It goes to the post on end of the generator.
4th wire is white. It goes to bottom post on back of generator.

Is it wire 2 and 3 that I polorize with???

Also I noticed that someone used a jumper wire between two post on the resistor back. Any ideas why?? Bad resistor??

es, 2 to 3 (both are larger wires than the other two). If resistor on rear is really shorted across with a jumper, it will defeat the voltage regulation function & leave you at maximum charge all the time. If oldest 8N gen type then it will have a high/low adjustment screw on rear bearing carrier plate & others before you may have set the charge rate there.

Is your 50 a front mount dist or side mount? When you say resistor is jumped is that on the terminal block or the back of the regulator?

ou are talking regulator & then jump to terminal block!! With such PP communications skills, Bud, you need a lot more help!

If you have a front mount dist and with the resistor jumped, you better get ready to replace the ignition coil. The resistor is there for a reason.
