Live Hydraulics for an 8N

I'm looking for a 2.5 GPM gear pump to build a belt driven live hydraulic setup on my 8N. The pumps that I've found locally are in the $180-$200 range which is going to blow my budget before I even get started. Does anyone know of a supplier selling them for a little less?
Thanks Richard

Many old power steering pump from say a Chev pickup etc will do the job. Most are rated to put out are 1500psi

Thats interesting OLD, I was researching that option as well, but I never came across anyone who has actually set up an automotive power steering pump on an N series. From what I could gather pumps like the Saginaw TC are popular with the 4 wheeling crowd for Hydro steer setups, but they seem to put out only around 1100-1400 PSI. Maybe thats enough for most 3 Point hitch lift work? If anyone has tried an automotive power steering pump setup please chime in, If its a viable option i might go that route just to save a few pennies. Thanks

I have built dozens of N-series live hydraulic conversions using these - compact SAE-AA size that fits under the hood and they work great. I don't know what your budget is but even at that price you are going to have to be creative to put together a complete system for less than $300 in parts.

Thanks guys, thats what I'm looking for. I didn't see a side load rating on that pump, does it work Ok belt driven? Or is it designed to be direct
driven only?

Many years ago I built a belly sickle mower form just mower to fit a Farmall B and I use a power steering pump on it for the lift. Worked real good and was still working just fine when I traded it off for a round baler

I have used this pump

Google Northern 10564

With a BK30 pulley
Masterdrive BK30
1/2" shaft
5/8" V-belt drive
O.D. 3-1/4"
1/8" key way
"Note" I did have to have the key way broched...

Add another link are 2 if the other does not work.

Very few pump manufacturers will give you that data. Most are designed for direct drive so if you are going belt drive you need a drive system that minimizes the side loading. That is one of the reasons why I use a synchronous drive belt rather than a v-belt which requires greater belt tension. I can tell you that with a synchronous belt drive that pump works fine.

Mother Earth magazine used a stock P/S pump to lift a dump bed years ago. Most pumps have a bypass valve that can be shimmed if it does not have enough PSI. One from an import will use a remote tank. They are a lot smaller and easy to hide under a hood. Honda,Toyota etc.

When I got my JD B, it had a F150 powersteering pump running the 3 point. Guy was using it with a 5 foot brush hog!!

Was fairly slow, but would pick it up for sure....

He had just taken the generator off, and put this pump on. The tractor had a Mag on it, and he simply hand started it. Kind of a neat set up, but he did a VERY VERY ugly job of putting it together!!!! :(

Yep I have used power steering pump for a lot of things over the years and also used A/C compressors to make an under the hood air system on things like my farm truck. Sure is handy when you need to air up a tire out in the filed or when you buy an old dead tractor that has flats on it so loading it up is easier. Even if the tires only hold air for 10 minute they sure load up a whole lot easier

I use this pump from Surplus Center now.

Did use Northern for years but they got too expensive.

I have shipped about 50 kits in the past 10 years or so and had nothing but positive feedback.

My original idea I might add.

Fancy mechanical engineer told me that it would blow up the belly pump! Not!

Yep, you are the man I have brought a few of your live thangs no complaints... I think I have brought are traded you out for all your gizmo's :)... Your Zane Thang is a neat set up...

I see the benefit of going live even if one has to buy it... It will take a rite good rig'er to set up his own belt drive set up for a front mount... BTDT I am not sure I would do one again I would just buy it...

It would not mater who I brought one from you are TOH I would end up modifying it to my like'N....

If I depended on a N it would have a live set up :!:
If i had a 9N/2N it would have a Zane Thang :!:

Thanks Zane for you contributions to the N world,,, there may be others that come along that can modernize your work but you planted the seed...
