I'm a little new so please bear with me.
is there a tachometer that will let me check
the RPM's on a "40 9n? thanks in advance.

You can try to find someone who has an old analog engine analyzer like a sears model. I use one that's about 40+ years old.As long as it has a 4 6 8 cyl. selector switch it should work.

I haven't found a "modern" one that works accurately yet.
Is there a particular purpose to measure you engine RPM?
I ask because maybe something that is "close enough"
would be close enough?

You can buy manual tachs that you hold against the crankshaft but they are sometimes hard to use and you get up close and personel with a lot of moving parts. :) Look on EBAY and you will find laser tachs for about $15 or so that will read RPM's by scanning a piece of reflective tape that you put on the pulley. They are pretty accurate

tully.........ummm........tacho fer 9N? Unless the blue-lite police are issuing tickets fer exceeding 16-mph. Ford sez 2/3's throttle (approx 1600-rpms) will give yer PTO approximately 550-rpms. The ONLY thing I kenn think of that is even remotely rpm sensitive, is seed sorter. This is a cone shaped contraption that spins seed out when they reach a certain RPM by centrifugal force. ........Dell
