Wheel nut keeps getting loose

The nut on the real axel keeps backing off. Yesterday, I reshaped the snap ring to make sure it was really holding the nut, but today after an hour of mowing, the nut has backed off again, 1/8 inch. I just ordered a new nut and ring, but the question is, Why won't it stay tight?

Torque to 450 Lbs/Ft.

If it still loosens, a replacement hub and/or axle is in order.

Agreed, but undersized hubs have not been available for 25 years or more so it is often necessary to replace both hub and axle.

is the nut shouldering and bottomong befor ethe hub is tight on the axle?

if so, you really need at least a new hub, maybee axle.. but for a time you can shim the splines with palate strapping if you need to get thru a season.

cut shims, thin, install, tighten, run, tighten, run, tighten, run. may take 3-4 sucessive tightenings till it wears in.

you can use a 2 part squeezum nut to lock in place if the old threads are worn on the axle. alternatively, if the axle is worn, threads but good splines, it can be rethreaded. some do a single blip of weld to tack a nut on, then grind out and fix with a file when they have money and time for parts.

all depends on your budget, time, etc. it's a 'tube of caulk' type fix.. but can work in the correct circumstances, knowing it's a bandaid, not a repair.

I found that the new rings didn't quite meet my
approval. I put them on and then put a zip tie
around the nut (on top of the ring keeper) and drew
it in as tight as I could. That keeps the ring pressed
down in the groove where it belongs. When I cut off
the ends of the ties I found that you really can't see
them there. They haven't moved in a year and I
have actually been using that tractor quite a bit. The
hubs where in fine shape on mine - I had just done
brakes.

The axle and hub are both shot. Used parts are readily available, but what else will I need to do the job right. I see gaskets and seals, etc in the parts list here. Can the axle be inserted from the outside, or does the tractor need to be opened up? Thanks.

Pete.......CAUTION on USED axle hubs, they're SOFT and WEAR easily. Yes, the axle can be inserted from outside. Usually the axle does NOT wear 'cuz its HARDER steel. Sometimes you can "shim" the splines with scrap steel strapping straps from wooden boxes. (did I say that right?, sometimes my tongue tangles my toothies) As Sounder alludes there is a 2-part NUT that can clamp down on yer 1-1/8x18 threaded axle and will HOLD pretty good. Remember, that 2" NUT is torqued to 450ft/lbs. Thatza BIG GRUNT on 3-ft breaker bar. Iff'n yer sphincterly challenged, RENT a 600ft/lbs 3/4" drive torque winch. .........HTH, Dell
