Hi.

Note: I'm updating this list as answers come in, and as I find out from the manual / other reading.

I have what was told to me was a '52, but I think from the stamping, it is a '48?. There is no ignition key for this model, and it doesnt seem that there ever was one.

First off, here are the images:

The tractor isn't starting, but I was told that it was working by it's previous owner, a few years ago. There is no spark at the plugs, or wires. That is as far as I've got with it. I'm looking to ID the basic parts and have the pictures labelled above.

1: oil breather
2: oil filter
3: Starter – no solenoid on 9N/2Ns
4: amp meter (always reads zero) - FRONT
5: starter switch? - FRONT
6: switch for lights? - FRONT
7: amp meter (always reads zero) - BACK
note for 7: i took off a wire to test it, but it's back on now
8: starter switch? - BACK
9: switch for lights? going into Relay? - BACK
X: (not labelled in picture): terminal strip?
10: Generator cutout relay (same function as a voltage regulator).

1 is the oil breather, when removed you can add oil through the tube it sits in. 2 is the oil filter housing, the oil filter is inside; the top comes off with the one bolt in the center and the oil filter can be removed and a new one installed;; and there is a drain on the bottom to drain the filter assembly/housing.

Is this a front mount or side mount distributor?? I did not look at the pictures due to being on dial up and taking a long time to be able to see them.

Ok that would make it a front mount which was made from 1948 to early 1950. In early 1950 they came out with the side mount. Easy way to test thing is unhook the wire at the top of the coil then turn it on. Touch the wire back on and off a few times and watch for a small spark. If no spark good chance the points are bad or need to be cleaned up

You have a 9 or 2n with an 8n engine. #5 is where the key switch should be...maybe that's your on off switch now.

You do have a 9N/2N with an 8N front mount engine.

3: Starter – no solenoid on 9N/2Ns

7: amp meter (always reads zero) – BACK – Doesn’t look to be connected

10: Generator cutout relay (same function as a voltage regulator).

Your starting point is to get a new wiring harness and replace the mess that is there now.

Good luck!

Welcome to the forum! Looks like folks have you covered.
Lisa is spot on, it's a 9N or 2N, switch is where the key was.
#3 is your starter. No solenoid on an 9N/2N.
A set of manuala will help you a lot when you can get them.
Bruce has a link to his 75 tips that can help you a bunch too.
Here's his link
Also, check out John Smith's awesome website here for ID,
history, used parts, how-to's etc.
For the wiring, Google "wiring diagrams by JMOR" to find some
excellent pictograms that are accurate and easy to understand.

Thanks a lot to everyone for your responses. I've updated the OP with the new information, and hopefully it helps others down the road.

What I see in your pictures is #7 is where keyed ignition switch should be, #8 is back side of amp gauge and #9 is the light switch
