3 point level won't stay where I put it.

So I'm a total noob with my 2N. I've used my dad's modern Kubota quite a bit, but the 3pt on there seems like a whole different story than this one.

I have a blade and a simple hitch attachment and I've tried with both of them (thinking weight is going to make a big difference). My problem is this:

I just bought the tractor and trans/hydraulic fluid was REALLY low. But the 3pt system worked as I'd expect. So I filled it up until it registered properly on the stick. (I found out why it was so low..after filling, it seems alot of the seals leak in various places now).

Now, I can push the lever down all the way and the implement drops, but as soon as I let go, it comes all the way back up.

How fast it comes up depends on how much power I have it set to. If the power is enough to (very slowly) bring the implement up (when I let go of the lever) then it won't stay down...it'll always rise when I let go. If the power is low enough to keep the implement down, I can't bring it up.

Basically the lever seems to either always bring the implement up (no matter the setting) or never bring it up. I'd assume it should go up/down with the lever and stay wherever I leave the lever (this is what it did before I added the fluid).

Any help for a noobie to understand what's going on here and what I may need to adjust?

Thanks, I just LOVE this forum so far. This is my first problem I haven't found an answer to by searching around (amazing amount of info here!)

Rob the 2N does not have position control. It doesn't stay
where you put it. That can be added with a ten minute
bolt on called a Zane Thang that forum member Zane sells.

Even with that design limitation, it should stay all the way up
or all the way down. It may need to be adjusted.

Ah HA! I kept seeing something about a "Zane Thing" and I was like...whaaaat? :)

Thanks I'll check it out.

So to keep it 'all the way up or all the way down', as mentioned, should I just do that/control that with the power (ie. how much power I'm sending to the hydraulics)? Or does it sound like something's wrong?

That is not right. It should go all the way up or down regardless.
It may be a simple adjustment, but it's not right.
Does the handle come up when you let go of it, or just the lift?

Good question, helped me see what's happening: I push the handle all the way down and if I hold it, it'll go down.

But, when I let go of the handle it pops back up to the mid-point and the lift rises. It feels like, at the lower position, the hydraulics are pushing the handle back up when I let go (?)

Rob,
The Zane Thang will do just what you want. I've had one on my 9N for four or five years now,
works great. I have a Kubota as well, so I know what you mean.

t sounds like your friction disk cork is worn out or needs the nut tightened.

Sounds like it might be. Good place to check. Cheap and easy!
Not sure why that would have changed by topping off the fluid tho.
I think I have a bag full of new ones on the pegboard out here.
Seems like I order one and get five. LOL

There are two adjustments on a 9/2N lift. There are discussed in detail in the I&T FO4 manual. The first is the main spring (the big spring
on the rear of the tractor). The yoke must be turned so that there is just the slightest preload when the lift is raised. The second
adjustment is the quadrant. Loosen the four bolts and slide it fore or aft until the lift just starts to raise in the last two inches when
you raise the control. Also sound like you need a new friction disk.

Thanks everyone...tried googling replacement of the friction disc but came up blank...waiting on my books in the mail...will just hold tight until then.

Thanks for all the help!

Well, that was a much easier fix than I thought it was going to be. All fixed, thanks!

(as a tractor noob, I hesitate to start just turning bolts until I understand what's going to happen...thanks for the go-ahead ;) )
