timing saga con't

For those of you that read the previous posts - I installed Petronix electronic ignition and the same time that I rebuilt the entire engine. I couldn't get it started, but seemed like it wanted to fire. I removed the electronic ignition and went back to points. Sounded exactly the same.

So I was questioning if I got the timing gear installed correctly.

I'm not sure how well the timing marks on the timing gear show up. There is a X on the timing gear by the crankshaft and a hash about 180 degrees opposite the X.

There is also an O on the crankshaft gear that doesn't show up. It is located at the base of tooth above the X.

Have I done something wrong here with the timing?

Remove the valve cover plate. Turn the engine till the #1 piston is at top dead center.

If it is timed right and you are on the intake/exhaust stroke the intake and the exhaust valve should open or close at the piston comes to top dead center and just after top dead center.

If it doesn't do this turn the engine 180 degrees so that the #1 piston is again at Top Dead Center and try it again. If yous till don't get valves opening and closing you are out of time on the cam gear.

The timing marks will have one at the bottom of a gear and the mating one at the tip of the gear. Point or slot.

H.C., I concur.

Using the other (correct) mark will move the distributor slot to vertical, just as the photo in the shop manual shows it to be with the timing marks lined up.

The CRANKSHAFT key will be exactly at 9:00 as you FACE the front of the engine, at that time, as well.

Thanks everybody

Now i need to reinstall the timing gear cover. Any suggestions on how to get a good seal with the oil pan without taking the oil pan off and replacing the entire gasket? Or is that the best thing to do?
