Genny - cutout can confusion

Working on my 43 2N front mount that a PO put battery negative ground and been running this way since.
Replaced the non-working 3 wire genny that had a jumper wire (PO installed) going across the 2 studs that would have gone to the V.R. due to front bearing started screaming.

Replaced with a 1 wire and replaced the cut-out as mounting tabs were broke off.

I understand the need to polarize genny to make it work.
As I understand it I need to jump across cut-out can for direct contact from battery to genny and just a spark will do. And any time I disconnect the battery I need to repolarize this way.

Now for my confusion part. As I understand the way the cut-out can works is that any time the genny makes more power than battery has it closes the points and any time battery has more power it opens the points effectively disconnecting battery from genny.

The point that confuses me is that when the points are open is that not the same as disconnecting the battery?
Please educate this confused ol' brain of mine.

Thanks, Norm

es, it is same as disconnecting the battery. The NOT TRUE part is, "And any time I disconnect the battery I need to repolarize this way.

I took one of my 6V generators to a "new" shop a couple of
weeks ago to have them test it. Their test method was to spin
it with a belt and hook a light bulb across the terminals. If the
light lit, it was good. The light lit, so they told me to take it
home, put it on and polarize it. Then it would probably work
for me. At least they didn't charge me anything.

One of the local car parts stores told me they couldn't test it
at all, because their test machine was powered by a 12V battery.
Still looking for a new starter/generator shop.

It is a problem that many of the ole timers that knew much about this stuff are gone and todays parts changers cant change a part unless their smart phones tell them which part is bad and exactly where to find it.
I know much of what goes wrong with these tractors I was taught at a very young age how to fix, however 50 +/- yrs of not using the lessons has taken it's toll and since I still use a flip phone.... lol
