Tailpipe bracket

My 8N came with the tailpipe supported with bailing wire and this worked. Got it cleaned up now and need to mount my tailpipe bracket 5260. I believe it mounts to lower stud on axle trumpant and it looks like its a little loose on the skinny pipe. Is it supposed to hold the pipe snug and what is the purpose of the long slot? Anyone have a closeup pic of this bracket? Thanks

I have replaced several of these brackets and have never had a snug fit around the tailpipe. Even on the older original muffler and pipes the fit is still loose. Have no idea what the slot is for.

Mines always been loose, too. As far as I can tell, that slot is there to catch random grass so you have a panic attack when you finally smell it slowly roasting back there.

Big,

How about a split sleeve around your pipe to take up the slack or cut off that fold at the bolt end of the clamp so the clamp ends come right together?

That slot . . .
A couple of carriage bolt heads in the slot bearing against the pipe would tighten it too.

T,good suggestions. Thanks for the ideas. Come to think of it the bailing wire was just a loop to support the end of the pipe, not lock it down. After the other guys chimed in and advised their brackets were not snug I can live with it too.

They do fit loose on the new one piece mufflers because it was designed for the original style 3 piece exhaust with offset inlet and outlet muffler, this clamp held the outlet pipe tight on the back of the muffler. This old style muffler is now being reproduced but they weld the outlet pipe on the muffler for some reason.

The tailpipe bracket is probably loose so the exhaust system can expand and contract with heat. If it was held rigid, the pipes and muffler will still expand, but have no where to go except to distort. This distortion will eventually cause failure.
