Leaking Sherman update

Had to order a new water pump so I thought it would be a good time to split the tractor a have a look at that early style Sherman Step up to see what's leaking. Found out it was the countershaft pin. Pulled the Sherman and could tell the pin is a little loose on the front (nearest the engine) and that is where the oil is coming from. Thought I'd try to find a replacement but have had no luck in doing so. I'm to the point where I think I might have to use a sealer of some sort but not sure if that would work either. Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated. Dan

BigDanT,You say,Pulled the Sherman and could tell the pin is a little loose on the front (nearest the engine) and that is where the oil is coming from.
By loose will it move side to side or just forward and back? There should be a small welch plug in front of the shaft to seal the hole up and prevent the pin from moving forward.look for it in the bottom of the bell housing or replace it.If the shaft moves side to side the shaft bearings and and possibly the case are worn.

Den...no welsh plug, front of pin is stepped and then covered by nose cone. Pin should be a press fit but his one is loose in the front(ID larger than OD). With the larger hole in the back side of this early style case my guess is someone tried to drive the pin in front the front making that hole just a little too big. With no other options i cleaned it up real good and put some sleeve retainer on it and reinstalled...see what happens??? Dan

BigDanT,Ok you have the older style case with the step on the pin at the front.Hopefully the sleeve retainer will hold the pin tight and seal it up,worth a try as good used cases are hard to find. Or a bunch of machine work on the case.
