Retainer on the bottom of steering shaft.

I'm assembling a steering gearbox.

At the bottom of the steering shaft is a "Ball Nut Retainer" that's silver. I have that new. I also have a new "Eye"; which appears to be made of brass.

Looking at the shape of the retainer and the shape of the cavity that it goes into. It would look like the retainer should go in with the hump pointing down into the well.

Thing is, if I go to put it on the end of the shaft like that, the hole in the center is in the hump, which isn't flush with the end of the shaft, and the eye won't reach...unless I pound it so hard that I bend the hump out of the retainer as I pound in the eye.

Before I do that, I want to perform a sanity check.

Should the retainer mount the retainer so that, when installed in the tractor, the hump is up, flush against the end of the steering shaft? If so, then the eye will pound right in without bending the retainer.

I have the picture and parts breakout from the dealer. The retainer is to small to see its orientation in the photo.

Thanks!

Great! Thanks for a picture. After posting the question, I tried it that way and assembled. I had less "slop" in the steering.

I then started to try to get my shimming right...which turned into a problem. It took me a few assembly/disassembly cycles to test the shimming. In one of those cycles, the eye and retainer must have dropped without me knowing. So...I need to get a new bearing, eye and retainer; because mine are now toast.

I thought it was smart to prelube the bearing (by packing with cornhead grease)...trouble is, it made the eye slippery and the bearing didn't hold.

I cleaned up the head of the shaft and will assemble the bearing, retainer and eye with some locktite on the eye next time.

I was sooooooo close. I had it all together and was steering side to side. I just thought it was a little loose, so I took it apart one more time to remove one more shim and....

My wife said that I should have left it alone and the next time it goes together and steers, she's gonna shoot me if I let the perfectionist take over.

:)

Thanks for the picture!
