Steering problem

47 8n that is hard to turn , I have centered the steering wheel and positioned the sector arms slightly angled back. Steering seems smooth and no noises while turning the full range left to right. The steering wheel has some play , it will move from 12:00 position to 2:00 before the arms move. I tried rotating the eccentric covers and it made no difference. The steering wheel does not raise or lower when turned or pulled up on. The arm on top of the spindle that the drag links fits into is bent up 3/4" compared to my 48 8n that steers fine. Question is , would that make the tractor hard to steer and if so can I put the arm in a press and straighten it ? I'm not sure if it's cast or forged. Oh yeah , both sides are bent up.

I doubt that the bend is the cause of hard steering.
Have you tried taking the weight off the front end
with a jack to see if it steers better then?

Yes it does steer better with no weight on it. And I just replace the spindle bushings and bearings and the left spindle. It does have a lot of play
in the front axle , I'm not sure why yet but just by looking it needs a spacer or two. I can see the axle jump when I turn all the way in one
direction . Also I'm not to sure about the drag link adjustment , I set the toe in within 1/4" but one link is an inch longer than the other.
Thanks Royce for your quick response.

At some point someone put tie rod ends on it with threaded ends that were too long. They heated the arms and bent them up so that it wouldn't hit the yoke of the radius rod when it went past.

When I was young we had a neighbor that offered to replace the tie rod ends on our 8N. They ended up looking just like that. It steered just fine that way. I never could figure out why he didn't just cut off some of the threads.

notjustair ,
thanks you for the comment . it makes good sense . this 47 has the longer drag links but the 48 has the short ones maybe that explains it .
thanks for your help , i'll keep looking for the problem .

so hard steering.. but it has new spindle bushings, and no thrust play.

is backlash adjust too tight 9 hard to do on old box ).. if that much sector play, sector is worn good. maybee ballnut worn and cocking on worm!

thanks a ton for the reply soundguy !! from what ive read so far the gear box acts the way its supposed to but i still think there is something wrong in there because when i get everthing lined up and turn the wheel a few times one of the front tires is out of toe. and the fact that the axle bushing needs bushing and spacers doesnt help it so i guess ill order more parts for the steering box and axles spindle ,bushings and spacers the only 2 places i havend approached yet . i bought this tractor to sell , thought i got a good deal on it . ive allready spend more in parts than what the tractor cost .but i cant let it leave here knowing its not right or as close as i can get . but i will fix the front axle firts it easier the i ll tackle the gear box
thanks a bunch for the help , need all the hell i can get !
rick

( i don't even know if the new and old ones will swap.. have only done one old style box )
