OT, Timing chains

Two years I replaced the timing chain set (gears, chain, tensioner and guides on my daughters '04 Cavalier. It's an Ecotec engine. I put it all new components including the water pump. Brilliant idea to put a water pump inside an engine. Anyway, fast forward to last week. I received a frantic call from my daughter saying her car was making a loud clattering noise and she was driving it home late at night. It was clattering and missing, check engine light on and all. I tore it down to find a failed tensioner and the slap ruined the guides. I called the big box store where I bought it and they said it only had a two year warranty. I explained to them how I felt about a timing chain kit having only a two year warranty and we parted ways. I went to Rock Auto and this time bought a Cloyes kit, head set, new valves and head bolts and now it's running fine. Cloyes kits are very good. Lifetime warranty. Lesson learned. My buy only list now includes Cloyes. Milton air products, Moog front end components, LUK clutches, Stant cooling system products "etc." It was worth it when my daughter said "Thanks Dad" and smiled.

I always hated paying for "quality name brands" but in the long run it's cheaper than paying twice....

I had the same thing happen on a Nissan pick-up 2.4 :x
They still warranty the parts I did the labor for haft price...

For about a year the starter and battery was bad on the Nissan it cranked SLOW and the engine would kick back if it did not start. I believe the kick back wiped out the guides...

Being the lucky man I am I have never got to do a water pump on a Ecotec. I came close a week are so ago and read up on it... I have replaced a engine in one for a used car dealer it was not that bad of a job as long as you don't get the crank sensor wires caught tween the rear of the engine and the trans....

Be careful with "name" brands...

AC Delco has gone to crap (Chinese junk in flashy boxes)
MOOG has been moving quality down and prices UP
Monroe (never top of the line) has been going down hill, too
Dorman is also getting worse.

Buy any brake rotors lately? :(

I always double check warranty before I leave the store. Most stuff at O'Reilly's has the life time warranty on them and that is just another reason I buy form them. The other reason I buy from them is I have them or auto clone and they I have found are worthless

I would trade ya but this is a pay'N job  The last one I went over I got 10K that included parts I thought they were going to stick me with it ( I do not want a raggedy arse corvette BTDT)
