i just put a ring gear on my 47 8n last week and i had trouble getting hot enough . first i put it in the kitchen oven set on 500 degrees for about an hour that wasnt even close to being hot enough . got out the welding tanks , layed out the flywheel on a table and the gear next to it , started heating and about 2 minutes into that i ran out of oxygen . So then i got the bright idea to make me a forge . I put charcoal in my meat smoker ( kingsford brand cause i believe henry ford started that co. ) open the chimney and mounted a hair dryer my wife gave me in the hole that sucks air . got it going and tossed in some oak firewood and turned on the blower/dryer . i let it burn until the temp gauge on the smoker read over 800 degrees , set the gear on the grill and waited about 20 or 30 minutes took out the gear and it dropped right on the flywheel , spun it a few times and that was all there was to it .
im just posting this for others that dont have the resources that some others do , like me. like someone close to me used to say , poor people have poor ways !

I have never had any problems doing one by having it in the oven at 500 but I also put the flywheel in the freezer over night so that might be where your problem was
