Dennis Carpenter strikes again

I placed an order Sunday with Dennis Carpenter thinking it would go out today and get to me by Friday afternoon. Today I get the news it has been sent via Fedex-smart post which means Fedex delivers it to the post office to have it then delivered to me. The post office adds a minimum of three days to the shipment time (if you are lucky) and probably more. I had forgotten that Dennis Carpenter began shipping this way and for that reason have avoided buying from them for the last year or so.

I don't know why they think people ordering things are going to be happy with these worst possible shipping options.

I tried to call them to see if I could get them to upgrade the shipping at my expense, but in trying to reach them at 4:40PM EDT I got a message informing me their hours were 8AM-5PM EDT and that I should call back during normal business hours (I was under the impression that 4:40 PM was before 5PM). Thanks a lot DC!

UPS also offers the same service under the name of surepost. The vendor gets a deal by shipping multiple items in a single container and saves money. I don't care for either one of them. They usually won't give you the option for an upgrade. Some do,not many.It makes a lot of unnecessary stops in other states waiting to get bundled up again until it finds a ride into your state. When the USPS was hurting they came up with a way to make some needed cash. Congress is putting the squeeze on them to try and privatize yet another well run service. I'm with you,I'd be willing to pay a few extra bucks to get it sooner.

What really burns me up is having Amazon Prime. It was great getting stuff delivered right to my door in two business days.

Now they've starting using that surepost and since the post office doesn't deliver right to my door, I wind up having to go to the post office to pick up the package. What a rip off since I"m still paying for that free Prime shipping.

I have one of those multiple address lock box stations down on the main road and they don't leave packages there.

Reference USPS & packages. Our local P.O. sent out survey cards a month or so ago, asking for instructions on packages too big for mailbox. They put each patron's card in file for carrier. Choices were inside porch, outside porch, in garage, or with neighbor, all if less than 1/2 mile from mailbox, or notify & hold at post office for pickup.
Our regular carrier alway puts everything inside porch if we have a package, substitute puts regular mail in box, then package outside porch. Sub is afraid of barking puppy.

" in the car on blocks closest to the front door " would be a good southern option .

(reply to post at 18:11:46 06/22/15)

I don't have any choices, they don't even know where my house is. I live on dirt roads off the main road.

I don't have any problem with the post office. When I pay for UPS, I want it delivered to my house which they've been doing for 25 years.

Now with this surepost crap I have to drive to the post office.

UPS and smartpost. I use a lot. it is cheaper and the UPS guy will bring the package to me rather than mailing it.

The mail man will bring my packages right to the back door if they don't fit in my box.

What is up with Fedex? Sometimes they have a van, and sometimes they show up with a rental pickup ( a white Dodge) with a topper on it. They have a magnetic Fedex sign on the door or a sign made on a printer. It's funny because sometimes the driver is a big fat guy. he has to put the tail gate down and crawl inside the box way in the front to get my package. Then he can't get back out!

Fedex can be as much as $10 less for the same package. When I buy online I always compare UPS and Fedex prices.

You hit the nail on the head regarding FedEX smartpost. 3 days to one week additional for me usually, and usually I can watch tracking and it will spend 2-3 days in the same location, or it seems to. But I purchased something a couple month ago from approx. 100 miles south of me, and it hit 3 states total by the time it was delivered nearly 2 weeks later. I live in central MO, and it went to Iowa, then to Kansas, then back to MO. Unbelievable.

I used to have a red SUV parked in the driveway. I had to regularly check it for packages left on the front seat. Sometimes there would be a note in the mailbox telling me to check. Now they bring them in the garage and leave them on the porch by the kitchen door. If the garage is locked they leave them in a giant flower pot I have outside the walk in door.

I have an online UPS Quantum View account (free) and I get upgrade notices via email from UPS when a SurePost shipment is headed my way. All I have to do is click on the [i:836232941d][b:836232941d]UPGRADE[/b:836232941d][/i:836232941d] link in the email and I can change the shipping method to any other service I want and am willing to pay for. I never do because UPS Ground does not deliver on Saturday but my post office does and more than once I have got a SurePost package on Saturday that would have waited until Monday with UPS Ground. I've also observed that my SurePost packages are typically delivered the day they arrive at the post office. Just lucky I guess - my rural route carrier doesn't run his route until around 4 PM and the SurePost packages usually arrive at the post office around 8 AM. My USPS carrier(s) also deliver packages that are too large for the roadside box to my doorstep which is another 1/4 mile up my lane. It pays to have friends in high places ;-)

YMMV,

PS> McMaster switched from UPS to FedEx sometime this year. It costs more and I am no longer assured of next day delivery :(

TOH with all the shipping of parts that you do it's probably a good move to have the quantum deal.Do you have a business account with them?

I have an ordinary Harry Homeowner retail account. It is free as is the optional Quantum View service.
