9N Generator Not Charging

Voltage at the battery doesn't increase when the engine is running and there is no voltage at the generator output stud. I'm wondering if the generator needs polarizing after having the battery disconnected several times. If so, how do I polarize it?

If not, what else can I check to see if the generator is OK?

Polarizing depends on which circuit is present. First, is the generator a two-wire or one wire type? Does it have a square voltage regulator or the round can cutout? What does the ammeter show when it is running?

" Voltage at the battery doesn't increase"

Are you using an analog or digital meter? (see tip # 47 at the link)

" If so, how do I polarize it?"

See tip # 23 at the link.

Thanks, guys, for the replies.

Bruce (VA) asked: “Are you using an analog or digital meter?” Used an analog and the voltage stayed at 6 volts, no matter engine speed.

And my apologies, Bruce, for asking without first looking at your tips. I had forgotten about them but did review them.

Tim PloughNman Daley asked: “First, is the generator a two-wire or one wire type?” One wire.
“Does it have a square voltage regulator or the round can cutout?” Round can cutout.
“What does the ammeter show when it is running?” Slight discharge.

disconnecting the battery a few times matters not to the generator. It disconencts fromt he battery, by design, every time you shut it off and the cutout opens!

Slip the belt off and motor test it.

charge screw turned up, jump bat hot to armature... usually if it spins, it will charge.
