Knock when PTO is engaged

I repaired a blown gasket on the Hyd pump in my 9N a couple of years ago. Last year I noticed a knock when PTO was engaged. Today, I removed the pump and can find nothing wrong! There is a sleeve just above the PTO activation plunger that when moved back and forth sounds like the knock! There is about .012 between the cam blocks on the pump.
Is there something else that could come loose in the transmission that would only knock when the PTO is engaged?

From Smith's Old Ford Tractors:

"...as the cams wear they begin to knock louder as they actuate the pistons from side to side in the pump. The louder the knock, the more wear your pump has on it. It's generally not an immediate pressing problem. If the knock is faint you can probably put off repairs for quite a while. If it's knocking loudly you should buy a pump repair kit and do a rebuild before it quits all together. Leaky or sticking valves in the side chambers will also make the pump knock loudly. "

as said, knock can be wear, more knock under load menas more wear. I have seen some pretty beat pto pumps that knock loudly, still work for the average homeowner.

worry more when it stops knocking. ;)
