fan makes squeak when turned by hand. Should it ?

I can't tell if the noise is the fan shaft or the belt. I discovered this when working on the radiator issue I have in another thread, to try and get to top radiator hose. Fan makes no noise when running. After I hosed the fins the squeak stopped, apparently from water getting to it.

For s & g's I'd loosen the belt and check the fan for wobble or binding, same on the Genny, lastly, have some on crank over engine and observe crank pully at slow starter rpm. Ign off so it don't start. Rule out these obvious items. Next, check belt to pulley fit. V belts transmit power on the sides, if the belt is worn and bottomed it may slip more. If you can't turn an average n engine over via fan, belt is loose, worn, or greasy. Radiator fluid will make a belt slip n squeal a bit.

As sound say. It may be a loose fan belt or the water pump going bad which either can cause overheating problems

Do everything soundguy said.

And this is the most important: " loosen the belt and check the fan for wobble"

If that fan is loose or the pump bearings a re shot, you WILL get the fan in the radiator. (as in the picture)

Chances are good that it's just a loose or worn belt. If so, adjust it to 1 inch of play at the mid-point; no more, no less.

Us FOG's use a bar of soap on the belt instead of buying belt dressing.
