coil difference

Have 8-N 1952 side mount distributor. I wanted to change the coil to a "Flame Thrower" by Pertronix. The old one has Plus + and Minus - posts on it as expected, the new coil says "battery" on one side, nothing on the other. I assume "battery" on the new coil will be the + wire? Kids stuff here I'm sure, but not sure. The Plus wire comes from a hot source, and Minus to the distributor.

Sorry, but I did post this Sunday--just looked for it and can't find it for the 14th, had forgot it till today. Thanks guys.

Yes, battery is positive + post or ignition power, other side to dist/points

I dont know the specs of the flame thrower coils but these low compression engines really don't need high performance or high output coils but to utilize the hotter spark you can probably open the plug gaps a little bit. Maybe someone here has played around with one and found a good or better setting.

Might be good to check with Pertronix to be sure that coil is OK to be used with points, as some high energy coils are real low primary resistance & if you install one of those you will burn points left & right.

Bruce........o.k, heres the deal, coils really don't care positive (+) or negative (-) ground. BUT TRANSISTORS sure do. Pertronix uses yer points to SWITCH the HOT coil on and off with its TRANSISTORIZED module. Ittza matter of AMPS. Yer regular ignition points can only handle about 5-amps but the transistor is probably spec't to handle 25-amps. The HOT COIL needs lottza AMPS. I am pretty certain, the Pertronix is set-up fer 12-volts NEGATIVE (-) ground. Using 6-volts will probably produce about 1/2 the coil sparkie volts. Surprisingly enuff, yer 6-volt starter motor will work on 12-volts positive (+) or negative (-) ground. It will ALWAYS turn the correct direction. Ground is determined by how you install yer battery. Ground is the tractor cast iron chassis. .......HTH, electrical Dell

P.S........my opinion, save yer MONEY, while Pertronix's coil may produce 40,000 volts, yer low compression flat head engine probably needs only 8,000 volts to sparkle yer sparkies. Once yer sparkies sparkle, everything else turns to HEAT in yer coil.
