8n governor adjust

Just put this tractor back together after getting it in parts and put the 5 ft brush hog on it today. It runs good, starts good and has good oil pressure. Its a 51 side mount. The grass and weeds were thick and almost up to the top of the hood and I was in 1st gear and the tach was at the 538 rpm line. I was surprised to see the tach drop 2 to 3 hundred rpms when hitting the thick stuff. Should the governor have kept it closer to the 538 mark or am I expecting too much. Is there a adjustment I can do? Thanks for listening and advice is appreciated ..Fred

Grass that heavy you may have to take 1/2 a cut.

I second that. A full cut of hood high weeds with a five foot mower is just too much. You won't have any problems if you don't let it get that high again.

The weeds are hood high. You are over loading the 8n. Depending on the type of weeds. You need to take half a swath or less.

"...2 to 3 hundred engine RPM or PTO RPM?

In any event, you are expecting too much.

FWIW, tall weeds is easy stuff. Heavy grass is tough stuff.

Try some brome grass that is laying down sometime. That will suck HP like a snow blower.

like said, with a good working governor,
it will turn that carb butterfly open all the way if needed under a big load.
Once it's all the way open.....that's all there is.
just like a riding mower then...smaller swath or raise the mower some.

poor little N's. Most I see are spending their retirement years
mowing. always 90 degrees and very tough work.
Bet if they could talk, they'd ask for a plow or disk. Probably easier on em.

ps just like your manual trans truck. Don't let those rpm's get too low with a big load on it.
Any weak point in your bottom end will give up...loudly

First let me say that I was mowing a former garden spot that is about 50' by 60' to see how the tractor worked. When the tractor would drop the 2-3 hundred rpms I could move the throttle lever and get the rpms back so I'm assuming the there was butterfly travel left in the carb. So shouldn't the governor have done that? Because the tractor is new to me I can't say if the adjustments are right or wrong and thats what I'm asking is there a way to tell if its adjusted right and what should I adjust? My JD 40 doing the same job will snort but maintain the rpms when under this load. Thanks for replys...Fred

Is the rod adjusted in accordance with the FO-4 service manual? If you can recover the rpms with the lever I would think the governor should do the same.

It is normal for engine RPM to drop somewhat as load increases even if all is well with the governor. Such is the nature of a mechanical governor.

That said, if increasing the throttle position increas engine RPM under load, it would appear that your governor and/or linkage is not functioning as designed.
