New Drag Link Boots

Did a search a while back and saw recommendations to use a short piece of PVC pipe or a deep socket to drive the new boot on until it settled into a groove.

Drove the first one on until it slipped over the pittman arm journel and then got a loose fit. I'm guessing when filled with grease the boot will set back against the journel for a snug fit?

First timer checking to see if this is correct before Iruin a $10 boot.

The photo isn't very clear but it looks to be correct. Here is one I just did and it should be a tight fit. I used a spacer that was the correct size to tap it into place.

Well I was thinking of a typical dust cover, that if snug to the shaft will expand upwards or downwards with greasing as you surmised -- whatever end isn't fixed in an annulus.

Then I thought that these looked a little outside the realm of "typical" so I'd better shut up. :D

That's a ware plate it should float are you will twist the boot till it breaks. That was the issue with the rubber ones INSTALLER ERROW :!: and maybe cheap rubber...

DON"T fill it with grease they will wick it out use yer head when you see it bulge a tad STOP...

You are DEAD wrong but they are yours you can fudge'em up as you may... As the stud turns and it will every time you move the steering wheel it will tear the leather UP driver'er home till the ware plate sets in the machined grove so the ware plate will
float as the stud rotates...

Hard to say for sure, but it looks right if in the groove.
They're dust covers, not grease seals, so don't fill them full.

now I can fix mine. Thanks for the pix, links and info. I was thinking I had to replace the entire drag link now maybe I can fix the original. :D :D

Kenny, here is a thread with tips on removing the Pitman Arms and check out John Smiths site for tips to remove the drag links from the steering arms.

(quoted from post at 16:36:07 06/16/15) Thanks. Have maked this as this is a project that is about 7 or 8 on the list. :D :D

Kenny, while you have the Pitman Arms off you may want to install a new set of 8N3586 Dust Seals (Steering Gear Sector)(1pair)@$3.00. These are gray felt seals that just slip on over the shaft. It takes a pair on each side to fil the gap.

I ruined mine claening the N up with cleaning agents and pressure washing.
