8n tractor rear tire size

I'm new to the tractors but am buying rear tires soon. I have what I believe is an 8n. I currently have 11.2x28 on a 9x28 hoop. I would like to put 12.4x28 tires but what width hoops do I need the 9x28 10x28 or the 11x28
Thanks Adam

Well first off an 8N has a flat head engine and a 4 speed transmission. The early 8N had a front mount distributor that sits up and behind the radiator and was made from 1948 to early 1950. Then in April Or May they change the engine some and made the side mount distributor 8N and that was made till 1952. As for tires rule of thumb is rim should be an inch wider then the tire but you can get by with a rim that is 2 a bit narrower. Or in other words if you have say 11.2X28 tires on the 9 inch rim the 12.4 will work just fine also. Most tires if you look at the side wall with say things like 11.2X28 on 9 inch rims or 10 inch rims. I would have to go look to be able to say exactly what it said on them

Well it does have a front mount distributor and a 3 speed transmission. As far as the tires I have I did see on my 11.2's it mentioned about the 9 inch and 10 inch rims. Do you think a 10 inch hoop would look ok on it? I'm figuring on buying new hoops because the 11.2's have the liquid in them and figuring that the hoops are gonna be to rusty on the inside even though they look fine on the outside. And also the tires I'm looking at due to price are power king tires has anyone run them before?

Well if you want to waste the $$ go ahead and buy new rims. Just because the tires have liquid in them does not mean the rims are not any good any more. Shoot I have fixed a good many rusted rims and they have been used that way for decades. Ya you may want to pull the tires and tube off clean then up and paint them before installing new tires but that is about all they are likely to need. I can never see spending $100-300 on something that is not needed that is what has made the U.S. a throw away type of people and why throw stuff away that can be used.
As for the tractor you have a 3 speed is either a 9N or 2N. Fast way to maybe tell is the radius rod. If I-Beam type likely to be 9N if tube type likely to be 2N

I'm not one to throw things away either. My funds are limited and I was going to paint things while I had them apart. I was going to assume they would be rusted out that's why I was thinking of buying new ones. However I do know that factory parts do have better quality and even thicker metal than pieces now a days. I'll try taking them apart and see what the damage is and go from there. The tractor does have an I beam in the front. I think the tractor probably has pieces from many different tractors. The radiator says 2n I know for sure. I'll try and take a picture of the tractor tomorrow. Thanks. Adam

12.4X28 tires are one size oversize for your 9/2/8N. Though they will fit OK, they will increase the already too high ground speed a bit.

Your tractor came with 9" rims which will be OK for the 12.4 tires but 10" rims are recommended for 12.4 tires.

I have 12.4X28 tires on 10" rims on my 51 but it has a Sherman combination transmission that is nearly always in UD. If I ever change them again, I will go back to 11.2s and 9" rims.

I would stick with the 11.2's unless you have a specific need for
a taller/wider tire. They make quite a difference in speed.

You mentioned you already have loop rims? If so, they're not
original so they may not be of any better quality than what
you can buy now, but that doesn't mean they're bad either.

Fluid in the tubes doesn't rust rims. Unattended leaks rust rims.

To your question though, 12.4's will fit on 9 inch rims.
I personally think they look better on at least a 10 inch.

Early 2N had the I-beam radius rods but all 9Ns had them. And yes you could well have a mutt made form who know how many other tractors

Adam-
Get the rims off and inspect before you just start tossing away your hard earned $$$. I take all my tire work to either a local Mobil station that still has full time mechanics or I go to the Firestone AG Tire dealer 15 miles away and let them do the grunt work. Both places have the experience and correct tools to get the job done efficiently and to me, it is worth the extra bucks to pay them than for me to struggle and risk getting a hernia.

BTW, a 3-speed transmission indicates you have a 9N or 2N tractor. 8N's had a 4-speed.

From the look of your pictures I wouldn't think you need new tires unless they're cracked bad they appear to have a lot wear left. They could stand to be turned around because they're on backwards. Just swap sides.

12.4's kill a HP are 2  bigger is not always better... 12.4 look cool but work no better that 11.2's... I had rather it slip to keep the RPM up than bog down because of oversize tires...

You can not look at the outside of a rim and tell the condition of the inside... Its rare to see a 70 year old rim in usable condition and its a ell of allot of work to repair them.. The DEAL is a mounted set delivered to your door plug and play and forget about it for the next 30 plus years... Offer yours for a hundred are two with the tires on it and let someone else take the gamble..

I would pay extra for 11.2's for my N and have...
