OT- keep or sell 640

looking for opinions here guys.

Back in April i bought an 860 to have the live PTO. That seller had a 640 as well, and when he still had it a month later, i made him what i thought was a very low offer and he took it. Then as luck would have it, I scored my 871 two weeks ago for again a very good price.

So heres my dilemma, in addition to these three tractors, I've got two 8Ns- a 48 and a 49. These are both staying as one was my dads with has sentimental value to me, and mine has too much $$ in it to sell right now.

I've been thinking to myself, if i were to sell one, it would be the 640- its sort of a step above the 8n but below the 860. So last night on a whim, I threw my 640 on clist and to my surprise I've had a fair amount of interest in it.

The original plan for the 640 was to put my new-to-me dearborn snow plow on it, but that can easily go on my 860.

So my question, is there any reason to NOT sell the 640 if i get a good price for it?

Only you can answer that one. I know I will never get below a set number of tractor but I do that so I have one tractor for each job I do when I put up hay. I need 2 tractor for the balers 1 for the raking and 2 for cutting. Plus I need a loader tractor to move the round bales. Plus have at least one back up that can do almost every thing

A lot of guys here wish they had your dilema. :)
But you asked so...
I would sell the whole darned bunch or them (cept your dad's) and buy one good one.
Maybe something like a 3910.
42 hp, nearly triple the hydraulic flow of your Hundreds, differential lock, 8 speeds, independent pto, double reduction rear end with wet brakes, of course power steering, factory 12V with an alternator plus about a hundred other refinements.
And the best part is they were all diesels so no screwing around with points and carbs all the time.

Yes I don't think anyone can have too many tractors!

While the newer tractors certainly have way more options, to me they have no soul. I'm a car guy at heart so the looks are important to me too. And when ford when to the thousand series, the tractor became more utilitarian and lost their looks. Also, we aren't farmers. Truth be told we don't need any tractors. They are mostly toys. The only work ours do is brush hog parts of our property and plow snow. Been doing this with an 8N since 1990ish so the 860 is a major upgrade for us this year!

I think you guys convinced me. Better keep it

I think that's good advice dog, I did just that and haven't looked back. Im happy I did it. Now I got one new tractor to maintain and I have more time to play with it.

Your 640 is definitely a step up from an 8N, but it's a "40".
So it still has non-live PTO. If you are using the PTO for work,
that might make a difference in your decision.

Your 860 will have live PTO and generally put a 640 to shame.
It's heavier, so probably better to push a blade actually.

However, the 5 speed has it's own peculiarities and can be kind
of hard/expensive to find parts for when needed.
Clutch for example would probably run you $200 over the 640.

If I had my "druthers", I'd keep them both!
I don't have the luxury of that much storage, so I sold my 640.

Just bring it here and I'll store it for you. I will even run it from time to time for ya!

I have several 172 CI vintage Ford tractors but can think of no reason (other than sentimentality) to own a 134 CI version.

Like you, I do own (and use) two 8Ns, both with Sherman combinations. The 51 was my dad's and the 52 has just over 1100 original hours.

Similar to UD, below, I continue to consider selling all (or nearly all) as well as both of my late model MFs and replacing everything with two more Kubotas.

need money?...no room?
If it ain't those reasons, I'd keep it.
I have a lot of tractors. They all get used.
Do I need them all?..no, but I like them and they are good trade bait when I see another I want.

Have you considered making it a specialty machine?
2 of mine.
650 with loader and no PS, so pretty useless. I took off the bucket and rigged some steel and a 3-point receiver hitch thing
with a lifting insert. Use it to lift things onto trailers.
And carry/lift stuff away that would be a risk to my Kubotas shiny paint lol.
NAA with a home-brew front snowplow, loaded rears and rear blade with 3 sets of chains on each rear tire.
Neither gets used much, but when I need them, I need them..
...neither are for sale....

yup for now it stays. couldn't bring myself to even let anyone come look at it. its too original. would be a perfect one to give a resto to- original headlights and worklight, original toolbox, even have original proofmeter(broken) and a real nice original draw bar. heck this one even has all the original decals still intact under the hood.
