Tractor shuts down

I have a 49 8N that has been giving me fits for the last year. We have replaced EVERYTHING electrical, changed carb, gas line, and sediment bulb. The problem, after running without missing a beat, the tractor starts shuting down. This occurs when running a 60" finishing mower, this week after twenty minutes, it starts to shut down. Let it set for an hour, this time it ran 15 minutes and shuts down and there after five to ten minutes. There is no problem when the mower is not running. Any suggestions

as it starts to loose rpm ( shutdown ).. tug on choke... does this help any? If it does, check your fuel tank to see if the vent is clogged, and a tight fit cap, thus a tank vacume. Run with cap loose as a test.

If choke does not help, let it stall out and immediately check spark to see if it has spark. If it has spark after stalling, and won't restart.. then it is fuel. ( assuming it turns over, not seized, not spewing at radiator.. etc. )

Do as sound guy said,

I had the run awhile issue once, coil mounted next to engine,

Tractor would run cold, but when motor got hot, it would die, no spark, let it cool off, it would run again. Was the coil, some say once dead always dead, this one was not, must have had a broken wire inside and when hot it would expand and short out,
replaced it, problem solved.

Others speak of the fuel cap vent being stopped up, creating a vacuum in the fuel tank, cutting off fuel to carb. Let tractor set for a while and it fires up again, many times it will run up to 20 to 30 minutes.

One guy said it actually pull the tank inwards denting the tank, I do not see how a free flow fuel system could do that, but he said it did.

ne thing that most folks do not realize is that even with an all-healthy coil, from room temperature , as coil heats up to operating temperature, the output energy to plugs will drop to about 60% of its room temp value. Note: this is strictly due to the increased resistance of the heated copper coil windings. What this means is that if system is marginal, it will run until it warms up and then as it approaches that 60% value, the already marginal spark crosses over into the "won't run" low spark level. Cool down & repeat.

(quoted from post at 18:17:18 06/02/15) New fuel line routed near exhaust or engine?
vapor locking...

CBull

Thanks for the imput, have tried a couple things, one the gas cap, that did not seem to be the problem. The coil issue sounds like it could be the cause, but this one is new, and the one that it replaced was a couple months old. I have heard to wrap the coil in tin foil, any one tried that one? km

don't think that will help, as a coil generates heat internally...
Is your ballast resistor the stock 12250 resistor?

I just had the exact same problem. The mounting screws for the points wore out in mine and the points closed a little. The tractor would start and run fine. I would mow for about 20-30 minutes and would start shutting down. I thought it was the coil also, ran some ohm tests and the coil and resisters were fine, checked the points and found the gap had closed to .007
Also make sure you check the bushings in the distributor.
