OT Cataract Surgery

Since I sense that some of you here might be in the geezer category, I thought I might ask this question.

I'm facing cataract surgery next month and kind of wanted to know what to expect. Mainly what is the recovery time and what can I expect in the way of better vision? Of course anything else that you can add about the procedure would be appreciated.

Can't help you except to say that Tractor Talk board gets almost double the traffic that this board does so if I was askin I would do it there.

I had cataract surgery on both eyes 2 years ago. A month apart. There is really nothing to it. When you go in they will put drops in the eye they are going to do first like 6 or seven times and then into the opr. room. They will give you somthing that makes you relax and almost go out but you don't. Takes about 20 to 25 minutes. Then back to recovery for a little while and then send you home with 3 different kinds of drops that you put in twice a day. You will have to have someone drive you home.

Like others have said, one eye at a time, worn a metal patch at night for a week or so, I still wear glasses but mainly for closeup. I had real bad vision before. they have lens that will focus but can get spendy. Much better vision and no pain at all for me. the worst was the different drops at different times during the day, had to make a chart to keep track of them, All in all one of the better medical tings I have done.

I had my left eye done in November of 2013 and my right eye done in December of 2014.

The procedure itself is takes about 15 minutes and you will not know that it has been done. Aside from a 24 hour driving restriction and a lifting restriction for several days, the most inconvenience is the plethora (4, in my case) of eye drops that you will need to take for up to 4 weeks. I felt nothing.

For me, the most serious inconvenience was a shower/shampoo prohibition for about two days. Drove me nuts.

My distance vision improved significantly but they admittedly missed the perscription in the left eye by about .5, so left eye vision is not as good as it could be or as expected. It's a very good but not exact science, and I have never been a "lucky" guy. Sorry, insurance pays for this only once.

My doctor had me wear a metal patch for 24 hours, it's to keep you from rubbing your eye during your sleep. When they implant the artificial
lens in your eye they correct your vision for distance. You won't need glasses for distance anymore. You will need reading glasses for up close
reading. In my case I have worn glasses so long I didn't want to carry reading glasses,so my glasses are basically clear glass with a bifocal for
reading. Other than the drops, nothing to it.

Like he said,

I see great at distance, use reading glasses,

I am more light sensitive, need my dark sunglasses most all time I am outside, my Dr said it's like you have been in a cave for many years, now you are in the light.

Thanks guys for all the good info. It's a funny thing but my vision actually started improving about 5 months ago. I normally wear bifocals. I was at jury duty one day sitting outside the courtroom in one of those uncomfortable plastic chairs and waiting. I was reading the paper book that I had brought and it soon dawned on me that I was reading out of the top "long range" part of the glasses. I quit wearing the glasses altogether because my regular long range vision was seeing double through the top lenses. I see fine at long range without the glasses.

The thing now is that the cataracts are starting to affect me, especially in the right eye. With only that eye open, it's like looking through a piece of dirty glass. If I watch TV during a sunny day I have to close the blinds in back of the TV or the TV looks kind of washed out.

The eye doc said she could only correct my vision to 20/30 in the left eye and 20/50 in the right eye with glasses so she wouldn't even give me new glasses and recommends the cataract surgery. I'll sure be glad to get rid of that cloudiness.

I had it done 3 weeks ago, left eye only, had to were patch for 24hr, had a black eye for about 10 days, its like every one else it the best thing that you can do. youll, be surprised at how god you can see after a few days. Bob

Cary.........my Dad had some of the earliest cataract surgery done. The eye Doc practiced on rabbits first. Yeah, said the New Mexico sunlite was pretty bright. Still used reading glasses. .......Dell
